I do that all the time. Just a 5/16 chain and a flat hook strap. Same as a rub rail.... Or u can use the chain-hook straps like he did.

 

I've thought about it just never did it

 

I had to do that for an oversized crate I had on last year, didn't have any forty footers so I had to improvise and use chains as well. Went thru a couple of scales and DOT didn't say anything.

 

Yep, just remember your WLL drops to the weakest link in the set-up. So your 4" strap will only be good for 4,700# when using a 5/16" chain instead of the 5,400#

 

Since the chain is only hooked to one side of the trailer, the WLL is cut in half.

Unless those are scrap straps that are cut too short like 12 feet or something, why not just put the chain end around a spool?

 

No spools on the wheel wells just flat steel or aluminum.
