Currently at a driver mill with a graduation date of 7/28, I've heard that companies don't like you to wait very long after graduation to go to work but my brother is getting married in early September so I figured I'd just wait it out with a temp job in between.
Is that month/month and a half after school going to look bad on an application? How should I go about this, I'll need 4 days off so there's no way that'd work with any companies training period that I know of.
Postponing work after graduation...

A month won't look good, that's for sure. Find who you want to work for and send in a preapp. When the recruiter calls let them know you want to start in a month. They'll take care of it. Just say you need to set your affairs in order.flood and CasanovaCruiser Thank this.

Why can't you let them know up front when you need off and that you know that you will not be getting paid. Then get it in writing and don't take off too much time. Just enough to cover for what you need.

I tried this with Prime, my recruiter told me that home time is completely up to the trainer you're on the road with during your training program. I was planning on chancing it and working it out with my trainer but decided my career can wait, my brother and I are very close and I didn't want to take any chances missing his wedding.
Recruiter told me to apply again a couple weeks before I'll be ready to leave. I asked if waiting around and taking temp work would look bad and he said it wouldn't be a problem. That did come from a recruiter though so not really in the bank ya know -
My story, I graduated in early Dec. with a class A. Took a class B job (heating oil truck) in Jan thru Feb. Medical reason why I could not get a class A job in a small state.
First of Apr wife & I moved and neither of us had jobs in new area. Neighbor told me of a class A driving job. I started late Jun training on hot Asphalt tanker. I am now driving end dump trailers till LP season starts (Sept?) and will be trained on that as that is what they want me on.
Now I was told thru the grape vine that someone applied but from either when they drove last or went to school and drove had been too long since. I do not know if age (not that that should have anything to do about a job) or driving record or what they drove before had anything to do with not getting a job or not?
BTW I had very limited time with a class A, school only (had my class B since 1983) but have all my endorsements & TWIC and did drive a class B tanker. Also have a very good driving record so maybe this all counts for getting the job? Just luck of the draw?

Contact some other companies; some are excellent with home time. Maybe get you through orientation before the wedding.
Abilene Motor Express
Earl Henderson Trucking
Sodrel Transportation
PI&I Motor Express
Submit some applications and request an orientation date after the wedding or ask if you can complete orientation and then hit the road after the wedding. Most companies pop drivers with a pee test after celebratory time off.
