Hey, thanks Chinatown! Hayward is actually my home town! I'll most certainly look into that!

You can bank your Navy pension with that job. Several new CDL graduates that post on here were hired by Trimac right out of school. One got local; home every day. Not for me though; I like coast to coast. My little Chinese bride rode with me part of the time.

I looked at Military Sealift Command, but the pay isn't really that great unless you're an officer. In fact I got my Ordinary Seaman document in preparation for that and wanted a ship ported in Singapore, but the little wifey refused to move to Singapore. I still could have gone, but didn't want to leave her and the two little ones in USA or Beijing.

Not to be a buzzkill, but he doesn't have a chance in hell of getting onto the Elite Fleet with no experience. They are absolutely positively stringent on the 2 years of experience requirement for elite fleet drivers because of the industrial gas hauling at least is what i was told. I have about a year and a half experience and they wouldn't even consider me.

Now if you work out of any of the terminals hauling dry bulk or chemicals you could potentially get in right out of truck driving school so long as you go to one of their approved schools.

Last i checked the hayward terminal was hiring for a regional driver (They called it long-haul,but in the interview i found out it was really regional/local). They were offering 25$ an hour for all hours worked plus overtime after 40. It's a pretty sweet gig. They may be hiring for some time as they are in the process of converting the entire Hayward terminal from IC's to Co. Drivers

I didn't make the cut for the Hayward terminal either despite my experience, but large Companies often times like people fresh out of driving school more than experienced drivers if the experienced driver doesn't have experience with their operation (my exp. is all open deck).

    Thanks guys.

315Wheelbase, yeah, you are correct, I could easily go chase a better paycheck elsewhere closer to what I've done for the last 20 years, but I'm pretty burned out doing that. I get job offers for Fed jobs (shipyard, etc.) but if I never see another Navy vessel after I retire, I'll be quite happy! Worst case scenario I have those jobs to fall back on. I've known a few guys who have gone to work for MSC, but I also have no desire to go back to sea (unless it's on a Carnival Cruise (or better).

No worries Ramblingman, I'm looking for any and all feedback. I checked out their website and looked at all that stuff, and I did notice that Chinatown called out their Elite numbers. No biggie, like I said, I'm definitely willing to put my time in for less. It's nice numbers to look at for the future, though! Also, thanks for sharing your experiences with them. I'm looking for any info I can find on Bay Area companies, especially the ones that hire recent grads.

Were you with Trimac ? I wanted to check out Trimac but it said no riders.

Do you know if they allow riders now.

Olongapo is a great place , maybe going to Angeles/ Subic area this winter sometime. Will be at home in Baybay Leyte. Philippines at Christmas.

I know there is one Marine in the Philippines that is wishing he never went to Olongapo. The one that killed the Ladyboy there. Life in prison would suck but life in the Philippines would suck a whole lot more.

Hey Sparky, it sounds like you're in a great position to cross train into another career with your pension as a buffer and not having anyone to hold you back to boot. Go for it! Burnout sucks. Been there done it. I recently decided to change careers myself. Good luck.

Thanks FuzzyBuda, yeah, that's exactly where I'm at. Going to sell my house in San Diego (or maybe rent it out, who knows) but something up North where my family is, and then hit the road. I'm ready for a change! Good luck to you as well!
