I have to replace the mike on my mobile unit and I have a brand-new Cobra power mike laying around and was thinking about using it. The original mike was not a power mike. Not sure where/when/how I obtained the power mike but I must have paid something for it once upon a time and it would save me from buying another mike if I'm able to use it.

My radio is one of those Northpoint export radios with a few extra watts output (35 I think on hi setting).

My question is this: Are there any risks of screwing up my radio with a power mike? Never used one before.

Also is a battery mandatory. ie would the mike work as a conventional mike if a battery was not installed?

I don't believe it will work without a battery.
Normally in a mobile application you would need to turn the mic gain on the microphone almost all the way down to avoid hearing the wind blowing in the background

    Timin770 Thanks this.

Thanks. I only asked about the battery because I wondered what would happen if the battery went dead and I didn't have a spare onboard.

I tried the power mike but evidently it is wired different than the Cobra mike I was using, although both mikes are Cobra. I used to have the time and patience to tinker with stuff like that but now I don't so I just turned around and ordered the same model Cobra as the one that went bad The old mike lasted about 7-8 years so i figured what the hey
