Define cheap freight. Because everybody will have a different answer. That’s the nature of this industry.

Cheap freight is defined as anything less than what I'm willing to haul it for!

Yep you caught me. I totally am.

The point is everyone is quick to say not to haul cheap freight but we all don’t share the same costs. Your bills and operating expenses have no bearing on what I do with my truck. Everyone wants to talk about brotherhood and sticking together when the truth is most people would stab someone else in the back to get their foot in the door on some good freight.

This is probably the most honest answer that’s ever been typed in regards to cheap freight.

Not really, in terms of exact numbers sure. But 99% of cheap freight haulers follow these steps though.

    - tires have to be rolling can’t afford to sit a week or will be bankrupt

    - one repair from bankruptcy

    - look at OP, fuel surcharge taken away now he’s barely making any money and he isn’t even paying a driver

    - if you can’t pay a driver / yourself in the cost, it’s cheap. Refer to OP who is en route to bankruptcy now imagine him having to pay a driver

    - if you paid super expensive for equipment ie; 500k miles , 100k+ freight liner. You likely drive cheap because you’re an idiot

Cheap freight is freight that after taxes, maintenance, fuel, operation costs, costs of being away from home, leaves you with less a week than you could make driving a garbage truck.

In my book, if I can't clear $500 a day after all costs in a bad market, its cheap freight.

Cheaper for me to sit at home, than to pull $1.50 a mile loads.

I dont think in terms of rate per mile. Rate per mile isnt a fair comparison because it doesnt factor in dead head miles to get there, waiting time at either end, ect.

When I look at loads I look at how much I make per day on it and anything less than $1500 a day is "cheap freight" to me, I usually make around $2k a day. I work 2 1/2 days a week and make between 5-7k a week (before expenses).

I’m paying multiple drivers and nowhere near bankrupt.
