Not entirely sure.. the fleet I drove for had an even split between the M-11 (beat the hell out of the L-10) and the 3176 Cats.. the Cat only had about 310 HP.. but it was strong as an ox

MXS cat with bullydog tune, 3.55 gears and 18speed. I run East Coast 100% loaded miles and get 6mpg with 3.55/22.5LP/18speed eaton. Truck pulls nicely.

Truck in avatar had the same engine and tune, but 10sp and 3.25 on 24.5LP, pulled real good. Biggest hill I pulled with it was on I-17 between phoenix and flagstaff. Had to drop down to 8th and around 40-45mph on the steepest bit. Pyro sub 1050 and coolant below 200 with fan engaged.

Every once in a while you say something that shows you've been out of the game for awhile. With old mechanical engines, that may have been true, but essentially trucks have been running electronic engines, all manufacturers for nearly 25 years. Most guys I know would like to limit it to about 1,600. Above that, what's the point? You're out of the power curve so you're just burning more fuel. Like this guy points out:

Had a great uncle who had one of them in a Pete, my grandpa, his brother, was pretty disgusted with that thing even though he was a Cummins guy.

Well, to be sure the first L-10 I drove was right after driving nothing but old 60's and early 70's trucks... I was trying to drive it like an old pre-electronic engine... Operating an L-10 at 1700-2100 rpm will cause it to crawl around like a slug.. I was livid.. then "discovered" the tech data and would never want to drive an old truck for any reason.. these people thing ELD's caused stress? Try driving a 280 Cummins up Donner! lol

It has nothing to do with ELD. An 02 ddec iv is the exact same engine as a 98 ddec iv. But an 00 to 02 is eld required and a 99 or older is not.

Now if you had said pre EGR....

Cool got a picture of a time slip?
AND just for reference my STOCK 70 duster in 1970 would run 14.00 at 99 mph on the bias goodyears.

    Gumper Thanks this.
