A loose fitting allowed all the power steering fluid to leak out. Roadside service fixed leak but after 30 mile drive to terminal, power steering still making some noise. Road tech had said that the loss of fluid might have damaged pump and might need to be replaced or it's air in the system.
Does pump need to be replaced after complete fluid loss? The main thing is I don't want to lose power steering out in the middle of nowhere.
Power steering leak. Lost all fluid. Pump still making noise

That said an easy way to rule out air is to pop the cap and shine a light in there and look for froth or bubbles. If you got froth or bubbles, then its air. If you want to fix it. Just drain the system, make sure everything is tight and then flush the system and fill.OliverCallenderIII, Rideandrepair, hope not dumb twucker and 2 others Thank this. -
The one time I lost all the fluid I was in the middle of nowhere Idaho and didn’t have phone service. I patched it up and when I got to Lewiston I needed a pump. I can’t say if it was from losing all the fluid or if it was from me using the only extra oil I had to top it off, which was Rotella 15-40. Lol

It most likely overheated and done some damage, but hard to say how much.
I’d change the filter and ride around town 20-30 minutes see how it does.Rideandrepair and JC1971 Thank this. -
Try a little STP,,
, hey, the pump is probably fried anyway, and not the end of the world, but depending on how long it ran dry, best to replace the pump. If it's growling, a bushing or bearing is toast and will take out the main seal complicating matters considerable.

I had the power steering lose fluid while driving, isn't that big of an issue. Just need to use the armstrong setting.
Highway speeds was really no different than normal. You really have to tug on the wheel when driving slow or moving while trying to park.
I changed my pump when I got back home. The next day a couple hundred miles later.
I'm sure your pump has some damage internal. How bad, not sure. But I am sure there's some damage. Best solution is to change it.
Also if you don't know how to set the stops and poppets. Hire someone to replace it. I installed my first pump and broke it. Thankfully the parts house replaced using warranty. I hired them to put the second pump in. I have been told it is easy to install. I figured it was even easier and cheaper for me to hire it out.
Good luck.Rideandrepair, Numb and JC1971 Thank this. -

Some steering systems can be hard to get the air out of. One of the best was is to put a jack under the steering axle and lift the weight off the tires then crank the steering from lock to lock 3 or 4 times with the engine shut off.
If that does not help then the pump has been damaged and needs to be changed as metal from the pump will harm the steering gear and you will be replacing that as well.Rideandrepair and dosgatos Thank this. -
