My power steering system is getting so hot it actually melted the plastic reservoir. I’ve changed the reservoir, all the lines, and the pump itself. It’s still getting hot. I mean hot to the point if you put water on it it steams and boils. Even happens while just driving down the highway doing hardly any steering. My question is. Could the power steering box itself cause the system to get so hot? Even while driving down the highway hardly steering at all? TIA

Thats a new one on me. Is your pwr steer pump extra hot. Is there a filter that needs to be changed? I would think if its the pump it would be making noise etc to be building that much heat.

It isn’t making any noise and yes the pump is hot as well. I’m stumped

Power steering is essentially a hydraulic system. When oil bypasses something internally (like a relief valve or a blown seal) it will generate a lot of heat.

Does it have a power steering cooler? If so, is it working? Should be able to shoot inlet and outlet with an IR temperature gun. Should see a temperature drop across it.

Now I'm not saying chuck a steering box at it but if you've replaced every other part in the system, good chance it is the culprit. My advise would be to take it to a shop. Most should have a flowmeter they can plumb in and measure return flow, pump flow rates, pressure etc and can determine if the steering box has excessive internal leakage or a poppet valve stuck closed and causing the system to run over relief constantly.

I'll take you wont believe this for 600 Alex!

Bad ground. 1999-2001 Frieghtliners did this. May have been others or more recent. First they didnt weld the ground stud 360 degrees. Its tack welded and the resistance and corrosion has built up.

Second, electricity is lazy and will take the path of least resistance.

You guessed it. Your PS hose is metal braided.

Ok, but it has a starter and batteries right? It melted your reservoir right? It has ground studs, right?

    Rideandrepair and spyder7723 Thank this.
