I am on electronic logs. I remain off duty while doing a pre trip. If there is something I need to do to the truck, I am not going to start the day and burn up 45 minutes doing what I need to do to repair a light or whatever. When I know that things are good to go, I hit the on duty pre trip and then go fill my thermos, fuel, or do whatever little things to tick off roughly 8-10 minutes and then take off. Hardly ever more than 15 minutes. As far as Post trips, the minute I stop for the day, I hit the on duty post trip. Let it tick off 8-10 minutes then go to off duty or sleeper. Again, hardly ever hit 15 minutes on the e-log. I may be actually doing something like greasing my truck and giving it a serious go over, but I am not going to actually burn up time on the e-logs while I am doing it. I know, I know.... for the purists and anal compulsive crowd, this all is not per the actual rules. So what? Was the same with paper.
