Depends where you are at.
To get my cdl you had to say it word for word and hit all required malfunctions.
Got a 100.
When I did it for my first company I pointed at it and said it looks good. All they wanted were the #'s for brakes/tire tread.
Best to learn it word for word to start out & you will develop your own method. And probably only do a good pretrip once a week if you have a decent company with decent trucks.
Its also in the rand McNally if you don't have a state issued book on ya. Next book you'll start looking at is service manuals and learning how to fix some stuff.
I still remember my first teachers saying... Everything is properly mounted & secure (PMS). Cause this things a #####. XD -
When I took my test, I didn't study the book at all but already knew how to work on trucks. I named just about every part on the truck I saw, and even some I didn't. It's no points off to list too much stuff, as long as you don't miss something.
That being said, when I took my test things were a little more lax (1992). I instructor told me that when we walk around the truck doing the inspection, if he stops at a point and I move on around the truck, I better come back to where he was standing because I missed something. I actually drove the truck to the test too. When I called beforehand and asked about it he said that he couldn't tell me it was ok to drive the truck there but if me in the truck were there we would take the test and he wouldn't ask how the truck got there. Ah the good old days. -
Re-read why i posted last it was not attack on you it was on the state instructor. I know if i was an instructor i would want to hear some things in some detail. How do they know that some people would simply just say "checks good" and not really know what to check? Just saying it to pass.
-
Listen. I did not go through a trucking company to get my permit or cdl. I did it on my own. I rented a truck to take my test.
Im simply telling you what I did to pass the test. I has a perfect score on the pre trip. I stated I took my test in MN. The requirements mat be different in other states. -
And again... nobody is denying or arguing that. I just think it's odd a state doesn't give a crap to simply allow people to simply say "checks good". thanks
-
Alright. You can memorize crack, bent, broken, burnt, kinked, split, scalded, whatever you'd like.
Good luck to you. -
Yeah it's what most require so i will go that route.

Op, if I remember from your other posts you are planning on training at roehl correct? Which terminal? You will test for your cdl in that state and then transfer your cdl to your state. If you test in wi., I can tell you that it will be much easier than you are thinking. For other states I cannot say. For example with a radiator hose, we would say properly mounted, not damaged, not leaking. That covers it. It would be redundant to say properly mounted AND secured at both ends (cuz if it wasn't secured at both ends then it wouldn't be properly mounted would it?)... The only time you have to say anything about abrasions bulges or cuts is with tires. Just remember the phrase "properly mounted, not damaged, not leaking." That covers almost every part. If you try to give too much info you will likely just stress yourself out and end up forgetting something. Also, in wi., they gave us a "cheat sheet" that listed each part we had to check. We got to use the sheet on the test.
Again. This was how it was for ME. I tested with roehl in Marshfield, Wisconsin.
Regardless, whatever company/cdl school you go to, they will teach you everything you need to know about how to pass their test. No need to lose any sleep worrying about it.1278PA Thanks this. -
When I tested they wanted everything as they had listed which was everything. Some of the students trained using the checklist and didn't make it. I learned in the order of the parts from onside to the other.
G13Tomcat Thanks this.
