Question 22: Are motor carriers required to retain the "legible copy" of the last vehicle inspection report (referenced in §396.11(c)(3)) which is carried on the power unit?
Guidance: No. The record retention requirement refers only to the original copy retained by the motor carrier.

As mentioned above, if it passed your inspection then there is no documentation to be completed therefor nothing to keep from day to day.

I'm a one man operation, one tractor, one trailer. I have NEVER ever filled out what you call a DVIR. During any kind of inspection rather its the scales or my B.I.T. program, they have never ask for a DVIR, I'm in California and stay in California. I don't know what happens out of California.

You are exempt from having to keep records or do one then.Diesel Dave Thanks this.

The only thing that is required of me is my maintenance records for my 90 day inspection. And my hours of duty.

I kick the tires to see if they are flat and look at my 5th wheel arm and glad hands
John Dewart and MidWest_MacDaddy Thank this. -
Pretrip documentation is not required by law. Post trip is. Also, there is no law requiring a post trip be a minimum of 15 minutes. I don't where where people keep coming up with that number but it's all over this forum.
-
The post trip documentation has not been required since December of 2014 unless a defect is found.MidWest_MacDaddy Thanks this.

Interesting. I was unaware of that.

Just an FYI... Higher up in this thread is a link to the information about decreasing the paperwork burden across the industry.
Stay Safe,
MDHotH2o Thanks this.
