I had a truck roll because I did not thoroughly check the steering, no it was not an old high mileage truck, quite the opposite. Does not change anything no one was hurt but they could have been.

So the answer is as long as it takes till your satisfied thats its safe .

I had an auto inflater to make an ### out of me once. I picked up an empty trailer with a flat tire. Yes I know I was wrong to do that. However Once I got stopped I called my carriers breakdown number and told them. Then I went inside to eat. I never looked at that dang tire. When the guy got there to fix it he asked me with a bit of a perplexed look which tire? You guessed it. It was no longer flat. The guy looked at the tire and said it was in bad shape and changed it.

Sometimes I wonder where you all got your CDL's? The Pre-Trip is the time to check to see if any part of the truck is failing. No matter what time or how long ago you check that very same part it could fail anytime? When you catch it you save money and time, so how long should you take to inspect? At least 15 minutes to do the minimum. And yes it's not for any inspector, it's for you. The faster you all learn that the safer the road will be.

Just because somerhing is not mandated by actual MUST and SHALL language does not mean it proper to not do it. A good driver will not put a CMV on the highway until they are satisfied the rig is safe. This is one of the primary things that seperates a mere steering wheel holder from a professional. In my last comment I was 100% in the wrong. I offer no excuse. I was getting close to popping my 14 and could not do a 10 there. I should have bobtailed out but got ate up with a case of the #######. Lesson learned.
