    Hi everyone,

I plan on attending a mega company sponsored CDL training followed by an on the road mentor training program that lasts a few weeks. For those that have been through this already, what can I do to prepare for the class work? I read that the pre-trip is what most students study. Is there any way to get a jump start on learning this material or is going to be different depending on the company?

Also, do I need a laptop during class or just a notebook? The recruiter I’m working with listed what I should bring but trying to figure out if there is anything else not mentioned that would make things easier. I’m also curious what would make the mentor training part easier since we are basically going to be living in tight quarters for awhile.

    thanks all

I understand this is almost a month old, but for others that may read it, take enough money to get back home in the event anything unexpected happens. I can't say about the laptop, but honestly, if you don't have one and are looking for work, I personally would not spend money on one. I see pre-trips vary from state to state and instructors teach different ways to do it so I would say do as they want it done. I am fortunate that I never had to do that as there were no state/federal driving tests back in the day. If your months away from testing and live near a truckstop, you can hang-out and watch drivers back-in and see how they get around. Might help a bit.

I'd take the laptop to use as a backup.

Use a flexible duffle bag for your stuff. Don't use a hard suitcase. Try to put everything in a single duffle bag because there will be two of you in the truck while training.

Roll your clothes, don't fold them. This way you can carry plenty of work clothes, socks, underwear, flip-flops for showering.

Known by a few names such as Ranger Roll, the Military Roll, or the Burrito Roll, rolling your clothes is the best way you can pack to reduce wrinkles and maximize space.

Thank you. I have a laptop but want sure if it was needed for taking notes in class. I can use my phone of course as well.

Depending on which mega you’re going to, you might find a specific forum for them on TTR.. here’s a link to the sub forums.
