Wow, what schools are you guys going to? I went to a 160 hours course and was behind the wheel for at least 50 hours (on the road and yard time) and racked up about 850 miles on the road.

well my test is tommorrow the semi i will be driving and my test are both a few hour drive from me at the moment, im gonna drive there some time this evening sleep in the semi tonight so im well rested when i take my test. ill run threw my pre trip a few more times after i get there and see if the place the truck is parked has a nice open place i can do a couple backing drills in. the guy that is meeting me there tomorrow to ride with me to the dmv is going to show up about a half hour before we need to go to the testing facility so i can run around town a little before my test.

is there anything else you suggest i spend a little time on before my test or last min advice?

    wish me luck

Try to relax, In my opinion pre-trip will set the tone for eveything else if you struggle with that then examiner will be up your arse for skills and road test. Fast forward to road test, Pull outta there like you really know what you are doing, make your shifts as best as you can, they can't fail you for scratchin' a few, I would say if you can't actually double clutch, then just simulate it, you already have the timing down with floating just match up with the clutch. Just dont go to deep on the clutch, find that friction point. I am assuming what ever trailer you are using is empty, start out in 4th gear, eliminate some shifts, if you can demonstrate that you can keep the truck under control, your road test should be fine. Your up shifts and downshifts are all about rpm's. Downshifting 1 gear 1000 rpm I go down to 9 or 8 slids in eaiser, doubledown 700 rpm I go down to 6 always. Slow it down go 5 under the limit if you have to that won't fail you. Think about your next move before you get there, thats why you slow it down, stay as smooth as you can be. The examiner knows you don't have a cdl and no experience they are not looking for perfection, just the ability to keep it under control. Speaking of control if you miss a gear stay calm and do what you gotta do to hit that gate you only have so long and then it is considered out of control. Good Luck

i wasn't able to get a flatbed for the test so ill be taking the test with a bran new tanker trailer

this is the combo i will be taking the test in. never mind the truck being stuck i got my lesson on how easily semi's get stuck that day...lol that is the truck that ill be driving after i pass my cdl were going to put his dragon trailer on my truck and he is going to take the bran new trailer though.

also the trailer is not plated yet, but i have a 30 day registration permit for the trailer, should i put that on the trailer before the test or put it in the folder with the registration cards and insurance cards, iv got the plate for the semi sitting on my desk going to put that on when i get up to the truck later today.

thank you everyone for your advice and best wishes, passed my cdl test today!!!

i missed 4 items on the pre trip, had a couple minor mishaps with shifting nothing major though. skuffed a couple gears a couple times, my biggest mistake was one time i was down shifting missed the shift as i was slowing down comming up to a intersection and went past the 100 feet without being in a gear and skipped to the next gear down, i got docked a point for that. i had to use 2 pullups on my offset back, first one i completely lost sight of the cones on both sides and i was pretty close to them pulled up a few feet started backing back in again and i was wasn't where i wanted to be so i pulled up the furthest i was allowed got the truck back underneath the trailer and backed straight in. the 90* offset and the straight line i hit first try. and actually the instructor said he had another guy with the same size truck and a similar size trailer, failed the test 5 times on that 90* and filed a complaint saying it was impossible in that size truck. so that made me feel good. when we were done in with the test but still sitting in the truck i asked if i passed he said yes i did real good 15 mins later i walked out with a cdl in my hand. the entire test took about 2 hours.

I drive a 10 speed and I was taught that it was OK to start in 2nd if you first do a "torque test" to ensure that you are in 2nd and not reverse. I was taught that if the tractor torques to the right you are in 2nd, if it torques to the left you are in reverse. This has worked for me.

Congratulations Ezrider_48501 on your success! I got my CDL back in January and it was great to finally have that CDL. Best of luck to you.

thanks everyone i don't know if i would have passed or not without the advice of everyone on this site, as well as the advice of some other people iv met sense i started this endeavor.

the guy that rode with me to the drivers test i only met last week (not a forum member here), i had the truck available to me to drive but i didn't have a cdl driver available, the guy was willing to take time outta his day to come with me. so there are still some people out there with a good heart and not just out for themselves, as we were leaving i gave the guy all the cash i had in my wallet as my token of appreciation, although he said i didn't have to give him anything.

my advice to anyone taking there test, make sure you really be aware of your surroundings they will try to trip you up on stuff to make you make a mistake, where they took me over railroad tracks the made me make a left turn and then right as your coming out of the turn where you would normally grab your next gear is where the railroad tracks are. also they tryed to trip me up as we were pulling out for the road test the instructor gave me two options on how i could leave the parking lot. then he said i could pull out whenever i was ready. i looked over at him and he didn't have his seat belt on. so i asked are you ready, he said yes, i said put your seat belt on, he then said good job. go slow take your time, i pretty much did 5mph under the speed limit at all times in the test no more no less, give yourself plenty of time to make any maneuvers that you need to no need to be in a hurry.
