Been on disability for nearly a year with back issues.
If/when I am able to go back to work, will DOT allow me to take my prescriptions off duty?
    I take percocet. An opiate.
Will definitely show up in a test, but do they allow off duty use?
Can't seem to get a straight answer from potential employers.

try and wean yourself off those, go to Aleve, or Tylenol.

ask your doctor for a replacement that is non-narcotic.

    He did answer your question.
You must be able to pass a urine and hair follicle drug test at any time.
Even if you have a prescription for an opiate, you won't be allowed to have a cdl or drive a commercial vehicle.
May not seem fair, but that's federal law.

    IluvCATS and buddyd157 Thank this.

You'll have a hard time getting a straight answer from actual employers either.
And straight answers you get elsewhere may not match up.
I have taken percocet or the like for dental procedures a bit over the last few years. I've been told I'm not supposed to have any trace of it in my blood in a truck at all, and I've been told I can with a note from my doctor. I have gone with the second answer...but usually that has just meant not waiting 5 days after the last dose to resume work. I've gone back to work the day after taking them. Would that be an issue if I got in a wreck and still had traces in my system ? I dunno. Maybe after another 5 or 10 years in the business I'll get a definitive answer. It SHOULDN'T be an issue, that's for sure. Traces in my blood of a pill I took three days ago make me precisely zero percent less safe.

In other words Oxycodone with APAP. By MME daily ratio of 4x per dose among the strongest offered to Pharmacy. Anything stronger is reserved by Hospital.

You have to stop taking the medicine as of Jan 1 2018, and show that you were lawfully prescribed such. And that you have completed approximately 7 times the withdrawal period (Based on half life) to be completely have it out of your system to be able to touch a 18 wheeler.

The information from the prescription and the prescribing doctor is necessary to defend against a hot drug screen which will certainly happen with this medicine but you are legal to have it in your system. But you are NOT legal to have it in your system while around or driving 18 wheelers at all.

DOT Drug Testing: Part 40 - Employee Notice

7 times 6 hours comes out to two to three days.

If a driver uses a drug identified in 21 CFR 1308.11 (391.42(b)(12)) or any other substance such as amphetamine, a narcotic, or any other habit forming drug, The driver is medically unqualified.

I haven’t had a prescription pain reliever since 2 years before my first CDL job. I researched this topic. You won’t keep your job if they test you randomly like they are required to do.
