I know it is dishonest. I would’ve fixed it to oem spec and it would’ve been like it never happened. Or paid a shop. I just have a hard time with life in this regard, because let’s face it, you can never be too honest. I know how that sounds but I’ll use talking to a DOT officer as an example. He gives you an inspection and checks your logs right? Well he’s pretty friendly and you guys start chatting. Well earlier on the day the trucker flew from say Florida to California and then about 6 hours later he goes on duty to drive. Well now the officer looks at his hours and sees he’s 21 hours into his 14 and puts him OOS. Had the trucker never got too friendly and opened his mouth that would’ve never happened and that’s what he got for being too honest. A lot of people get screwed over by doing the right thing in this world. While plenty others do the wrong thing and never get their just desserts. This world can be cruel and doesn’t care how you feel, which is why we got homeless vets or just people in general. Now of course, we don’t know their full story. But you get what I’m saying? Being too honest is almost for gullible fools. Like are well all 100 percent honest with our spouses? Do we tell them they look fat in their dress? Sometimes you have to keep things to yourself in order to create harmony. I mean look at our political figures? If they were truly honest with us about everything we’d probably be in a violent civil war right now.
edited: and I know that trucker should’ve waited 10 hours before his shift. But it’s a sticky situation because if he’s not getting paid is it considered on duty? There’s a lot of contradictions in the trucking industry. We can’t be foolish and not look out for ourselves. But I’ve reported this and talk to Safety Monday. It is what it is at this point. I just know we’ve all thought about things to save our butts from time to time. So that’s why I was asking about it. -

I’ve been driving for over ten years and I have only had two DOT interactions. One was a level 2 in Missouri, officer was an old timer, polite and friendly enough but no doubt been around the block many times. He weighed me, checked my paperwork and lights and sent me on my way. I weighed on a CAT scale later and found out I was actually a little overweight on my tandems (which is probably what prompted the level 2). It was only a few hundred lbs., but had I given the officer any trouble, he surely could/would have cited me for it.
Other one was just last year, I was like 2600 lbs over on my tandems (LOL, oops!). Again, the officer was older and super professional, but had that look about him like he could be a real prick if he wanted to. I accepted my fine for the overweight because it was 100% my fault, reworked the trailer right there and he thanked me and sent me on my way. He also pointed out a couple other items on my trailer that he could have cited me for but didn’t. But again, had I given him trouble or wasted his time or done anything stupid, I probably would have had a much different outcome.
But back to your original question, I really don’t know how to avoid the charge on your record. If it were me, I would accept the charges and move on. I’ve been there done that and survived.STRandy18 Thanks this.
