Truck drivers have the most important job in the country? You don't have a clue.

Okay, aside from my distasteful username, which I have tried changing but I don’t think that option exists and perhaps me going on the defense when I didn’t need to. I overanalyze almost everything in life. Whether it’s buying groceries or an important purchase. There’s no end to what my brain conjures up. I’m more disappointed that this even happened to begin with. I’ve been driving through Donners Summit for months now in the WORST possible conditions and having to chain up and do whatever is necessary to be a good driver. And this one little thing that happens and now from a numbers standpoint I’m seen as a bit of a liability. It’s like say you go to the gym and you’re a power lifter and dead lift 500 pounds on the regular. And then one day you go to pick up your shoes to get ready for the day and completely blow your back out. You’d sit there in complete disbelief on how something so little took you out. Now perhaps I’m over thinking this because what’s done is done. And me making the point that I wish I never told them and just fixed it myself. I mean come on, we’ve all thought about doing something to save our butts. And if you haven’t then you’re much different than the average person. Aside from my, emotionally involved original post. Is there anything that can be done? I have OOS for a leaking tire which is 30 points on my CSA and then this happened probably within a month or 2 of each other. For everyone else I apologize for going into defense so quickly. I understand your points of views. I am not taking full accountability like I should. And yes me fixing it without them knowing to begin with is dishonest. I’ve never been a half a55er so whether a mechanic did it or I did nobody would be the wiser and my company wouldn’t get dinged by insurance. I know that’s not the ethical way to go about it. But this world is dog eat dog. You really only have yourself to look out for. That’s why I made that point. Hopefully you understand my pov.

How would doctors get supplies? Teachers? Military? We are truly the backbone of this country and if you’re a truck driver and do not believe that about yourself… then that’s unfortunate. We are under appreciated for what we sacrifice to keep this country moving. Granted we have PLENTY of riff raff in this industry now. But I firmly believe we are more important than what we get credit for and how we get treated.

Now that is a much more respectable post! Any moderator should be able to help you change your username. @REO6205 , @d o g , @MACK E-6 are a few moderators that I can think of off the top of my head.

I can change it as well. He just needs to message one of us with his request, and we will get it done, as long as the name isn't already taken.

I know it is dishonest. I would’ve fixed it to oem spec and it would’ve been like it never happened. Or paid a shop. I just have a hard time with life in this regard, because let’s face it, you can never be too honest. I know how that sounds but I’ll use talking to a DOT officer as an example. He gives you an inspection and checks your logs right? Well he’s pretty friendly and you guys start chatting. Well earlier on the day the trucker flew from say Florida to California and then about 6 hours later he goes on duty to drive. Well now the officer looks at his hours and sees he’s 21 hours into his 14 and puts him OOS. Had the trucker never got too friendly and opened his mouth that would’ve never happened and that’s what he got for being too honest. A lot of people get screwed over by doing the right thing in this world. While plenty others do the wrong thing and never get their just desserts. This world can be cruel and doesn’t care how you feel, which is why we got homeless vets or just people in general. Now of course, we don’t know their full story. But you get what I’m saying? Being too honest is almost for gullible fools. Like are well all 100 percent honest with our spouses? Do we tell them they look fat in their dress? Sometimes you have to keep things to yourself in order to create harmony. I mean look at our political figures? If they were truly honest with us about everything we’d probably be in a violent civil war right now.

edited: and I know that trucker should’ve waited 10 hours before his shift. But it’s a sticky situation because if he’s not getting paid is it considered on duty? There’s a lot of contradictions in the trucking industry. We can’t be foolish and not look out for ourselves. But I’ve reported this and talk to Safety Monday. It is what it is at this point. I just know we’ve all thought about things to save our butts from time to time. So that’s why I was asking about it.

The DOT officers have a job to do just like us. And just like us, they deal with a LOT of idiots and a lot of disrespect. In your analogy above, the officer likely would have eventually seen the HOS violation whether they were being friendly with each other or not. On that note, I would advise everyone out there to keep conversation with the officers to a minimum. You can be polite, friendly and professional without giving them your life story.

I’ve been driving for over ten years and I have only had two DOT interactions. One was a level 2 in Missouri, officer was an old timer, polite and friendly enough but no doubt been around the block many times. He weighed me, checked my paperwork and lights and sent me on my way. I weighed on a CAT scale later and found out I was actually a little overweight on my tandems (which is probably what prompted the level 2). It was only a few hundred lbs., but had I given the officer any trouble, he surely could/would have cited me for it.

Other one was just last year, I was like 2600 lbs over on my tandems (LOL, oops!). Again, the officer was older and super professional, but had that look about him like he could be a real prick if he wanted to. I accepted my fine for the overweight because it was 100% my fault, reworked the trailer right there and he thanked me and sent me on my way. He also pointed out a couple other items on my trailer that he could have cited me for but didn’t. But again, had I given him trouble or wasted his time or done anything stupid, I probably would have had a much different outcome.

But back to your original question, I really don’t know how to avoid the charge on your record. If it were me, I would accept the charges and move on. I’ve been there done that and survived.
