Or if you don't want to pay the cost of a new truck you can go out and pay cash for a
$20, 000-$25, 000, 15-20 yr old truck as many have done. I have some friends that have done that each had to put $30,000-$35, 000 into the truck in repairs not including the cost of the truck, if I remember correctly this is about the same as doubleyellow had to do. This brings the total cost of the truck to 50-70k for a 15yr old truck with a resale value of $30, 000 at best. Those friends do ok but they don't make what I do with newer equipment, their equipment still breaks more than mine, and their fuel consumption costs them tens of thousands more than mine. Like I say they do ok but when they tell me what they've made all I can think is that I want more than what they have and I'm willing to put more into it if that means that I had to pay off a more expensive truck then well I was cool with that. Now they have trucks they have so much more money into them than they are worth that it doesn't make since for them to sell those trucks in order to get better equipment so they can make more and they're kinda stuck where they are without the ability to improve. Not to mention that them buying trucks this old limited where they can go to work many fleets just won't allow their trucks. The majority of the fleets the do allow older trucks want to pay 65% of van freight revenue which is going for 30cpm lower on the spot market than reefer freight that i haul and make 72% of.
I've been there done that I just bought a truck and I'm trying to tell ya primes lease purchase is not a bad idea compared to the other options out there. If buying new though a finance company its going to cost you about the same. If you go though the Loan Mountain who seems to be favored on the forum again its going cost about the same. Keep in mind prime's trucks include apu's ($8, 500 upgrade) Michelin energy singles (I'm guessing $2,000 upgrade) right way systems, lane departure and onguard systems which are being required more and more by fleets not that I want these systems but if not having them limits where I put the truck to work then Im forced to get them (probably another $2,000 upgrade) and more I'm sure I'm forgetting to mention. Go price a new truck spec'd similarly to primes trucks though a dealer or though Loan Mountain(who sells stripped down trucks btw) and you'll see the price is about the same.Last edited: Apr 26, 2016

I almost added a comment to that but decided it wasn't necessary. I suppose it's a partial glass of water.
