Its not really that big of a deal. If you're getting 7.5 mpg now, moving up to 8 is only about a 7% improvement. Slow down around 5 mph and you're there.
I've read in a number of places that you can see as much as a 30% difference in fuel economy in the same truck with the same trailer, load etc - just different drivers. That's 30% - and most of you need only to work up 5 to 10%!
Get a notebook, start a fuel log, keep track of it. See what works and what doesn't. If you work at it, you'll get there.

I do agree that the driving style has alot to do with it. These last two loads have been getting under my skin.
A light load of ac units 16k, with a fuel reset in houston, heading to MA: Ran 55 across I-10 with a headwind and managed 5.6. after the next fuel stop and into the hills it went up to 7.1. then ran 58mph and managed 8.2 to the 90.
kept 8.2 for the DH to ME for a load of lumber to SC. 45k with 39350 on the trailer axles (dead whale). that went down to 7.1 @55mph by the time I hit Harrisburg, PA for fuel. After that it went down to 6. I shutdown early then got up after midnight to run the last 450 miles at 50mph when there was less traffic. Managed 6.2 for my efforts.
My tire pressure is up to spec and I don't race up and over the top of hills. Now I'm just hoping for better Luck. -
And it begins! Got my forst dispatch today, picking up a reload tonight heading for Brooklyn New York. Id be lying if i said I was a little nervous about driving in Brooklyn.

brooklyn is my hometown lol, lock your doors lmao .
sittin in madison, wi to do three stop trip. this should be interesting. -
If you're "flooring it" going down the entrance ramp to the highway, you're wasting fuel. Same with idling. Quit using the cruise control in the hills - and see how much throttle it takes to get to the top of a hill without downshifting. Stuff like that.
You'll get better at it! -
Congrats Mont!!! Have fun in Brooklyn
