Ahh man, Im loving flatbed. Ive had some pretty heavy loads so far. The load im under now is grossed at 77k. Was a lot of fun going over the passes at 25 mph. While rolling through Nevada had a 7.8mpg, soon as i started hitting the passes it went down fast. So here at flying j now, and overall mpg for this trip dropped to 5.6. Atleast I didnt get into too much snow on the way here, so it wasnt soo bad. So far things are going pretty well, I finally guilted my trainer into taking a shower ,so I can finally breath a little better while sitting here in the truck. I am extremely happy I chose Prime so far, I have learned quite a bit about driving over the mountains ,ie shifting and so forth. Before we went over Donnar pass my trainer made me watch the Utube video of the trainee that rolled his truck and killed himself and his trainer. The thought of that video stays with me at every corner now, and really makes me concentrate on what im doing before i do it. Anyways, I have no idea which direction we are heading tomorrow, but where ever it is, I cant wait to get started.

I watched 2 trucks in front of me almost burn up their brakes goin down a mountain in Arizona. They flew past me with smoke pouring off their trailer brakes. Never underestimate a turn. You never know what is around that turn.

Think that was 5.6 mpg for the trip. Which may be good for all I know about flatbed side. Mont47 is your trainer showing you the techniques needed to operate the truck efficiently? I know a lot don't. I was fortunate to have one that stressed it.

My trainer really hasnt taught me much, other then keep the cruise at 59. But I have been keeping it at 56-57. Seems to get the average higher. On our trip from wi to ca we averaged 6.8. my trainer generally goes right to sleep after his 11 hours and wakes up when my 11 hours are done. he does wake up for the drops and receiving to show me how to tarp. Ive learned a lot of driving techniques from just reading this forum.

If you're worrying about mpgs there are things you can do... Goin up hill back off some, keeping the monitor to the right. However, be very careful. If you lose too much momentum you wont be able to make it back up the next hill. Eventually youll have to floor it to just make it back to the top. My trainer was the same as yours. Except we kept the cruise at 62mph.

Yeah, slower is always better. Watch that cruise in the hills and your manifold pressure. Much better on the MPGs to get into the right gear as soon as possible and ease up over the top. Oh, and turn off the CB so you can hear the fuel pouring out the stacks of the super truckers racing to the top.
