From reading the forum it looks like carriers are required to get a minimum number of years of work history. Of course they can always ask for more. It looks like most ask for the last 10 years.
What happens if you don't have a work history? i.e.. I have been staying home full time (watching kids etc) for the last 15 years. Also, I am a guy. I put that out there because even though it shouldn't matter, in peoples minds it does. Will the carriers still hire me?
No arrest record, clean driving record, will pass any drug screen.
I would hate to spend the money on getting a CDL and then find out since I haven't worked in the last 10 years they won't hire me.
I am not sure how the industry works, any help/clarification for my situation would be much appreciated.

I can't speak with any certainty but I can't imagine a stay at home dad reentering the workforce would be that big a deal.
-
I would say start off with a mega. If all your creds check out, its like hiring a kid that was a full time student. We all started somewhere with no driving exp.

The 10 year work history is a federal regulation and applies to drivers with previous driving experience. Non-driving work history is important as it has bearing on your work ethic, but isn't an automatic deal breaker.
FozzyNOK Thanks this. -
I believe they only need 10yrs of work history if you have driven before, and only 3yrs if you are new to driving. Some companies want 10yrs of history no matter what, and others just don't really care they just want something on the form so they can file it and never look at it again. As someone said before, the mega carriers really aren't that picky and I doubt they are checking up on you either. -
I see some places only want three of verifiable.

FMCSA rules dictate that all carriers as part of the employment process get a full ten year employment history. You must account for all breaks in employment. I took a number of years off to care for my mother. I was hired because I listed this time as part of my employment narrative and other then a verbal check at orientation nothing was said. Its all about accountability.

It is a federal requirement, you must account for all times of employment and all breaks in employment.

People change careers everyday. Trucking is in no position to turn down competent individuals who want to be drivers. Recruiters for megas must hire 200 people a week, just to maintain! So yeah...go for it.
-
Yup a revolving door, if they turned down every driver with a questionable work history there would be far fewer trucks on the road.morpheus Thanks this.

Not about being questionable.. its about documentation. A company can be fined / shut down for hiring unqualified drivers.
