TDI will let you use their truck and 3rd party instructor to get your CDL

What is TDI? I've never heard of it.
I like the idea of using a 3rd party instructor. They probably wouldn't fail you for lightly scraping the gears or releasing the clutch too abruptly when changing gears.

On a related note, does anyone know where I can rent an automatic truck to take the dmv test?

Greenville Tech has a good cdl school. Its one of the few approved schools Superior Carriers will hire recent graduates from. Otherwise they require 18 months OTR.

I've called around to a couple schools in SC, only to be told they don't offer private lessons. Penske said that I could rent a class A daycab with a friend who has a cdl and use it for my dmv road testing. It would cost $160 for 3 hours. Not bad. They have manuals and autos.

I just did exactly what you said. There are no private lessons in the Greenville area, and you cannot test at a trucking school unless you paid for that school (its a SC state law that TDI told me about). The only 2 places to even go to school from here to Columbia are Greenville Tech and Tri-County Tech and you would have to hope they had night classes that semester. I like you had a friend with a CDL, and we rented a 10 spd day cab and a trailer from Penske. Just my personal opinion, you might want to get the truck a day earlier so you can go over the engine and get familiar with the truck. I wouldn't want to go straight to the test if you haven't really drove it because that will be added pressure. I took my test in Greenwood just so I wouldn't have to deal with Greenville traffic. Renting the truck is roughly $120/day plus .14 cents a mile and the trailer is $34 a day plus .5 cents a mile so you pay more put it beats paying $4000 for school. If you have any questions about the 3 portions of the test just let me know and I will be glad to help you. I just took my test about a month ago so im fresh off of what you are trying to do and its frustrating finding information in our area because it seems our resources are VERY VERY limited.

@insipidtoast i just saw your other thread about failing. idk where you took your test at, but schedule it in Greenwood. The guy i had stuck to his score sheet but he was very relational and he gave me feedback after every section on what i got points taken off for, the roads arent as crowded, I would get a daycab because i did have 2 or 3 tight turns that I would have run up on the curb if I had a sleeper.
