I am an avid Drag Racer, I can tell you if you double clutch while drag racing, you would be a real lousy drag racer. lol
Double clutching any synchronized tranny doesnt do anything to save wear and tear. Its made to be single clutched in one smooth motion. -
F1 certainly does not use any manual clutch after first gear. I challenge the best of any driver to move a clutch pedal faster than about 5 hundredths of a second!

"Probably a dumb question BUT ....."
Please remember this, there are no dumb questions. To seek the answer demonstrates a desire for knowledge.
But, always be on-guard for "dumb answers."
My $.02catahoula Thanks this. -
You guys saying "this type of racing doesn't double clutch so no one must" is like saying I drive reefer and never tarp so there's no way any kind of trucking throws tarps.
Double clutching is used a lot in road racing. Stuff like GT and lower levels of racing. It's especially used with heel-to-toe downshifting. When you're trying to lose speed coming in to a turn and need to downshift, not double clutching can give a sudden weight transfer and cause loss of handling even with a synchro. Obviously this is why NASCAR or drag racers don't really use it.
F1 uses paddle shifters which is why there is no need to double clutch although there has been talk of forcing them back to manuals but I haven't kept up with the regulation proposals lately. It really had more to do with the computers and worries of cheating by having the software programmed for optimal shifting at specific points on the track. I believe they just forced standard software that all cars had to use rather than trying to push them back to manual. -
I usually float gears (definitely not an old timer). But if I can't get it I use the clutch, which sometimes happens. Engine speed and throttle timing is critical to floating. Certain types of load force against the transmission makes it harder to float a gear. I've learned both and use both. I won't sacrifice the transmission for the sake of trying never to use the clutch, and floating through upshifts in normal conditions has become second nature.

Interestingly enough the oddball 10 speed auto-shift I drive daily floats the gears to make it's shifts, you only use the clutch/clutch-brake to start off with then the trans shifts itself by float shifting via computer controlled throttle and electric servos.
It's almost a little unnerving when the truck shifts itself into neutral and bumps the throttle a little for a floated downshift lol. -
i usually float everything above 4th. i drive a 13 speed. usually only float under 4 on the coming down side. just me though every driver is different
