You need to report this. If it's minor and his first accident, he'll probably not be in a lot of trouble, but you have no idea if this is his only unreported accident, or if screw ups like this may be a pattern.
When I was an owner operator, some jerk driving a straight truck hit my parked truck on the street where I lived, and begged me to not call the accident in. (He was stopping to visit his girlfriend) He promised to pay me for the damage, which I could somewhat easily fix myself. We're talking $200 in parts, an hour of work, 20 years ago.
I felt sorry for him, he handed me $20, promised to get me the rest on payday. Payday comes, he doesn't show up.
I knocked on the door of his girlfriends house, and talked to her. She claimed she did not know where he lived.......
I called the company who owned the truck he drove.
This is what they told me. 'That guy was fired yesterday. He has hit 3 parked vehicles this week, and not reported the accident.'
I told them he hit my truck, and they asked if I filed a police report. Duh....no. I learned the hard way. I'll never do that again. I report all of them. I call the cops, if they'll show up. Document everything.
Another time a truck backed into me at a truck stop, and the jerk at first denied doing it, even though I had witnesses and pieces of my trailer were hanging off his flatbed. Then he starts begging me to not report it..since he had a safety bonus due soon. I asked him how long he had been driving? 6 months. 6 month safety bonus?
What is that, a ball cap?
I'm going to suck up $1000 or more of trailer damage, jeopardize MY JOB, so he can get his safety bonus?
Yeah, right.
Probably A Dumb Question...But
