You don't need a pure sinewave inverter. Things with a variable speed motor or clock/timer like pure sinewave inverters. Other than that theses modified sinewave inverters are suitable for most your needs.
Laptops you can buy either from the manufacturer or even aftermarket 12V cigarette lighter plugins specially for your laptop. Look on ebay and you'll find one. I always kept one for my laptops.
You sound like you have battery problems that is causing the drain.
Heres a picture I stole off ebay. This is a Dell. They are nice to have on the road. Buy you a new battery while you are at it.

The laptop power supply will have the watts on it, on the label. The little toshiba netbook I'm using only uses 30 watts.
You can also find 12v power supplies like mentioned in the post above by searching your laptop name and model number on amazon or google.
I had one, worked fine. -
Some inverters are just noisier than others. I have a 180w sine wave inverter I picked up at an electronics store for close to $100. Everything seemed to work ok with it, although my Macbook Air touchpad would be erratic unless I had a firm touch on the case. Similarly, the touchscreen on my cell phone would not respond while on the charger. Google search on both seemed to point toward "they just do that sometimes when not on wall socket ac power."
One day I was cleaning up my cb radio connections to fix a noise problem. For some reason in the middle of it all, I switched the inverter on or off and found the radio noise. I had another 175w cheaper inverter as a backup and plugged it in. No noise, and the laptop and cellphone now work fine when charging.
Moral of the story: Don't just assume that an apparently higher quality or even sine wave inverter will be trouble free. They can malfunction, as well as the chargers on your devices. Since the problem you have is exclusive to the laptop, I'd look at swapping that charger for a possible solution (versus the inverter that seems to power everything else ok). -
Now i have a cobra 300,now is charging and works fine,i pay 19.99 in loves
