I had a problem with Freightliner in Grand Junction Co. Three days to put in a rad. wanted to sell o e m for $4000.00 told the no get afytermarket they said they tried but there were none around. I told the i had one coming from Detroit Rad. for $1000.00 and t5hey just happend to find one out there for $1500.00 plus $1500.00 labor. Three grand and they never bolted the air charger back in and it fell out in Ok. Paid $800.00 to have that fixed. Called Frieghtliner in Co. and they kept blowing me off. I finally called O O I D A they told me who to call and who to talk to AND what to say. After chasing frieghtliner in Grand Junction for weeks one more call and the sent me a check in overnight mail>

I bought a brand new Pete from them and when I had trouble with an injector at 18000 miles and a warranty item, OKC said,"You bought it in TX,($12000cheaper) take it there to get it fixed." I tell everyone not to stop there anymore even if it is my home state.

I ran into the same thing at Rush in OKC. I don't buy anything at any Rush dealer. If my truck blew up in front of one of their dealerships I would call a wrecker and have them tow it home or hire a step deck to do it before I would give them my buisness.

The post first started because the truck had a problem with flickering or non-working lights. It is obvious to me that NOT one person responding to this post has absolutely any mechanical aptitude what so ever!.

Guys and gals, why is it that NOBODY has mentioned the fact that its ludicrous to even talk about replacing an engine or body wiring harness, when all that is wrong is a bad ground wire somewhere on the truck. The sad fact of all of this is, for about 1 day of your life, and $10 for an el-cheapo multimeter from Home Depot and $.03 worth of electrical tape you guys could have fixed this problem yourselves. NONE of what is wrong with your truck is magical voodoo, and I can guarantee you all that mechanic did was trace the bad wire might have taken him half a day worst case scenario, but more than likely about ten minutes. In the meantime they special ordered that wiring harness which took over a week to get screwing you big time $$$$. All this is, is just a matter of tracing wires with a multimeter until you find the wire or wires that are either loose, or have rubbed through and are shorting out. Flickering lights 99.9% of the time simply equals a loose wire.

The problem is, not all truck shops want to screw you, matter of fact most are honest as a summer day is long. But, these guys are in business to make money, and they have to keep that money rolling in to stay in business. They just cant afford in this day and age to do very many $50 fixes before they go bankrupt. As much as we update our logbooks, file paperwork, keep up with current DOT regulations and inspect our truck, it is just as important to educate ourselves on the mechanical workings of our trucks.

It really does sound like Rush took advantage of you 10x over, and in no way am I trying to rub salt in your wounds. Actually, maybe this will give you the jump you need to go out and buy a basic electrical wiring book at the local auto parts store, or spend some time on google figuring out how it all works. You will be amazed (probably pissed) when you become familiar with basic electricity at how easy it actually is to fix this stuff.

Oh, and btw. The AC issue are dang near just as easy to fix. If you can inflate a tire you can refill your own air conditioner on your truck. The freon cans you buy at any brand name auto parts store are just dang near idiot proof these days. Odds are, for less than thirty bucks and half an hour of your time would have been back on the road with ice cold air conditioning...

Kansas....You done gone and STOLE my next business venture.:biggrin_255::biggrin_255:

But seriously.....Big Reds Big Rig Electrical Service does have a really decent ring to it.....Don't ya think?????

He's right though fellow drivers. It aint rocket science.

It's just like plumbing...only you can't see the blockage or the break in the pipe. That's why you need the multimeter.

I figure $40 or $50 an hour for shop time should be more appropriate...as opposed to the $100 figure you guys are talking about. More than likely a man could build a very good reputation in a short period of time...if only he had a good location.:yes2557:

Rethinking just a bit on labor rates would depend on if an aspiring wannabe electrical redesign engineer had worked on it first. If that were the case.....$100 an hour would or could be a bit on the low side.:biggrin_2552:

Just because lights arent working right doesnt always mean "its just a ground" ALL electrical is tied together and it could be ANYTHING including harness. Have you ever slip one of these open??? What a night mare. And I have seen more times than not a wire in the middle has overheated at a splice, melted part way through the wire beside it and caused all kinds of strange things to happen. And in this case you spend many hours splitting the harness open with it layed all over the floor untill you find the problem then take hours and rolls of tape to put it all back together. This is usually where it would be cheaper to replace then fix. Not to turn this into a pissing contest but what qualifies you to say what was wrong with the truck???? If your that good and can figure it out with the little info you got from this post you had better open up a shop. You can very easily spend days just diagnosing a wireing problem let alone fixing it when the truck is right in front of you. I have delt with MANY people like you in my years as a Tech. and to this I simply say "If you know so much Fix it yourself or shut up"

Not saying I know it all by any means. Any tech that doesnt learn something new all the time is just lazy. I am always getting one of those "Never seen that before" when doing stuff other than routien maint.

Also I took it this thread was about getting screwed not by what was wrong with the truck??????

I thought all you had to do was go and buy those books and read and you knew everything and could fix it better then a professional.

I know of two O/O's that had the bottom passenger door glass taken out and their stuff stolen out of the cab. Glass was not broken just removed and this was done on their property in OKC. They won't do anything about it because you sign that piece of paper when you get their. It could have been a driver, employee or just someone driven by.

The company I used to be leased to had a trailer load of sheet steel stolen from the Rush dealer in Houston and the guy was in the shop during the day maybe four hours and had a king pin lock on.

I guess it doesn't matter who's property it is on their is thieves everywhere.

Rush doesn't help when i called up for a starter they said what type i understood. So we went down to rush over here in houston the starter we find on display is the correct one we needed. It's just really stupid just go over there for cheap starters that's about it.
