Prostate Cancer: Nine Things Every Man Needs To Know
Prostate cancer is 2nd most commonly occurring cancer in men but also one of the least understood. Here are nine things the experts think every man should know about the fourth leading cause of cancer death among men worldwide. What is the prostate? The prostate is a walnut-sized gland in men that surrounds the top of the urethra just below the bladder outlet. Risk: Prostate cancer is diagnosed in over 1.5 million men each year and causes approximately 400,000 deaths. Symptoms: Difficulty urinating, blood in the urine or semen, unexplained weight loss and general urinary symptoms. Who is at risk? Men over 50, black men are at double risk (advised to be checked over 45). The threat doubles if a father/brother has had it. Is it genetic? Not all prostate cancers are genetic, but there are many genetic mutations that can increase your chances of it developing. Causes: There is strong evidence that being overweight or obese increases the risk of advanced prostate cancer. Get tested: A PSA blood test which measures for high levels of protein in the blood is the first step in checking for prostate cancer. Different types: Not all prostate cancer is the same; some grow very slowly and can be monitored without any treatment necessary

Dad passed away from this. It is nothing to play with and very ugly to watch when it spreads. Worst childhood memories as he pasted when I was 15 at the age of 75! Please check yourselves as he was a healthy man but was in the Navy for 25 years and fought in WW2. Most likely had been put in contact with stuff that made It happen. My Uncle also passed from leukemia and was in Army for a long time.

The worst of prostate cancer is when it spreads into the bones. Super painful for months before you die.

They actually recommend everyone get checked starting at 45 now. Seeing more and more cancers of all kinds in younger people.

When I had the TURP surgery on my prostate, they sent sample to a lab who found a small instance of cancer. So I went in and they took 12 samples from the outside of the prostate and sent them to the lab. One of the 12 samples had some cancer, a very non-aggressive type. Then 6 months later they did the biopsies again with the same result, No change. Now it's a PSA every 6 months and so far the results are staying steady. Urologist says I may possibly stay without the cancer spreading for the rest of my life. Still, knowing it's in me is always on the back of my mind.
It's well worth the inconvenience to get tested regularly. I met a guy that had to have his entire prostate removed. Has to have a catheter full time, not to mention no sex life.silverspur, Siinman, blairandgretchen and 1 other person Thank this. -

Ah, the "priests disease", or so it was called years ago. You know, I could have had relatives that had prostrate issues, but again, it was never talked about. Died of "natural causes", and prostrate issues were one of them. They called it the priests disease because of their celebate nature, but once again, a total crap shoot. Subliminal mental powers can have a profound effect on ones mental state, but I still think it's all snake oil. I'm sorry, with all the money and combined research, a cure would have been found by now. They haven't cured anything. Like I've said at just about everyone of these posts, if someone asked me how I got to 70, and reasonably healthy, I will say,,,inconclusive, I just don't know.

Bad news guys; testosterone feeds prostate cancer cells
Testosterone is a hormone that can help prostate cancer cells grow. Stopping testosterone from reaching prostate cancer cells can slow and shrink the cancer. Doctors can do this with a treatment known as hormone therapy.
