I agree with your method and do log longer pre-trips when possible, but your reasoning only holds up for the 14 and 70 hour rules. It does nothing for an 11 hour violation. And if by "cutting corners," you mean using as little on-duty not driving time as reasonably possible, then I'm guilty as charged. I don't know how you're paid, but most of my line 4 time I'm not compensated for; therefore, I need to be wise in how I use it.
