I had a truck once get into 1st gear, and have the brakes released over coffee, amazingly no one had the guts to admit they had dean in the truck. I have a bad knee and could not catch up to the truck it damaged the hood. My fault I should never have trusted that someone would not **** around. You never want to leave the truck in gear. I watched a welder drop a spent rod and have the truck crank its self across the shop. Luckily it was in reverse and hit a wall.

Old mechanic forced me to get in habit of flipping the high/low range selector before touching the ignition key. With a Eaton/Fuller tranny, you can hear the air cylinder move back and forth. It cannot move if tranny is in gear.

had this happen a our yard. rookie came to me and said truck won't start. I went over jumped in , did like always, checked to see if it is in gear (and it was) put it in nuetral and fired it up.

His eyes popped out of his head, and I had a little chat about the safe starting of big rigs.

years ago, i woke up in a daze at 0-dark 30 to find my engine cranking away happily with the key off. it stopped, i went back to bed (that 'in a daze' part). i never thought of it again until a technician noticed that the wire powering the starter solenoid had been rubbing for years against the main battery cable to the solenoid; once that solenoid received power, the starter would've cranked away happily until something gave. luckily it was the abraided contact point (this time).

until reading this post, i never thought what would've happened had this short occurred when the truck was parked in gear.
