Back in the 1970's there used to be a newsprint truckers magazine called Mother Trucker News. A fair part of the magazine was devoted to drivers who would send a Western Union message to the magazine when they started their trip and another when they reached their destination. As I recall, there were lots of guys basically coast-to coast in 48 hours or a bit longer. 400 gallon fuel tanks, a couple of Black Beauty's & away you go. My friend Pammie was part of that culture, next time I talk to her I'll ask her what she remembers.
I used to do Edmonton to Las Vegas in about 32 hours. I did that enough times that I had it down to a routine.

And I'm not about to say they was worse.........
But they were ###### sure different! -
Regarding the tale of the cross country trip, the other question is was this under old HOS or new HOS? Old HOS you only had to be off duty or in the sleeper for 8 hours not 10. You also weren't limited to 14 hours of work in a day under the old rules. 10 hours driving 8 hours off, rinse and repeat. Now re-do the math!
trucker_101 and JimDriv3r Thank this. -
Aww jeeze, now trucker_101 is going to show more PC Miler pictures...

Under the old HOS it could actually be done if the truck was loaded and rolling in the wee hours of the am, and the driver got there late on Sunday, and didn't have a gutted truck that could actually run the speed limit in each state.trucker_101 Thanks this. -
It was 5 minute or less shower--and my mop got one shot of shampoo and quick rinse!
Couldn't help it!Lilbit Thanks this. -
I have to rinse my hair twice, but only because I have to use conditioner. I'm not a woman that takes forever in the shower though. Not being a morning person has made sure of that!
Quick showers, quick meals, don't waste time at the truck stops, keeping the doors shut on the truck, yep, it could be done. You'd be one tired trucker by time you got there, but it could be done!
With a gutted truck and today's HOS, the only way it could be done legally today is as a team. -
<<<Hiding in basement!
