Back in the 1970's there used to be a newsprint truckers magazine called Mother Trucker News. A fair part of the magazine was devoted to drivers who would send a Western Union message to the magazine when they started their trip and another when they reached their destination. As I recall, there were lots of guys basically coast-to coast in 48 hours or a bit longer. 400 gallon fuel tanks, a couple of Black Beauty's & away you go. My friend Pammie was part of that culture, next time I talk to her I'll ask her what she remembers.

I used to do Edmonton to Las Vegas in about 32 hours. I did that enough times that I had it down to a routine.

Carefully using part of my 5th amendment freedoms--and partially because I am a grandfather with 3 or 4 of the next generation working around me(who like the old b*****d I am) constantly scolding them about running legal-and fuel mileage-and properly running their business--I will NOT say How long Ca-Nyc can be done--what i will say is: I kinda maybe remember getting all my picks in Salinas area by early Thursday--and heading out--only to get maybe a little side tracked@weedpatch(you know where) and hook up with a couple of other extremely safety minded other O/Os and maybe not gettin out of that area till ummm Friday afternoon--and umm maybe kinda I think--being backed up to C bldg@the Point before Sunrise Monday--but I might be wrong--I am old y'know--yeah might have been a slight detour by the wagon Wheel--and not weed? well anyway--I mighta kinda remember doing something like that maybe once--maybe

Regarding the tale of the cross country trip, the other question is was this under old HOS or new HOS? Old HOS you only had to be off duty or in the sleeper for 8 hours not 10. You also weren't limited to 14 hours of work in a day under the old rules. 10 hours driving 8 hours off, rinse and repeat. Now re-do the math!

    trucker_101 and JimDriv3r Thank this.

OK, so lets look at the old HOS . . . 10 hours driving 8 hours off, no max work hours.

Under the old HOS it could actually be done if the truck was loaded and rolling in the wee hours of the am, and the driver got there late on Sunday, and didn't have a gutted truck that could actually run the speed limit in each state.

Ok if you are going to get TECHNICAL--back then--when it was different Lilbit--I do have to disagree--because back then I HAD hair(LOL) and when I kinda maybe ran like that--there was absolutely NO Time to rinse and repeat!
It was 5 minute or less shower--and my mop got one shot of shampoo and quick rinse!
    Couldn't help it!:biggrin_25525:

I have to rinse my hair twice, but only because I have to use conditioner. I'm not a woman that takes forever in the shower though. Not being a morning person has made sure of that!:biggrin_25525::biggrin_25523:

Quick showers, quick meals, don't waste time at the truck stops, keeping the doors shut on the truck, yep, it could be done. You'd be one tired trucker by time you got there, but it could be done!

With a gutted truck and today's HOS, the only way it could be done legally today is as a team.

I think you know I have nothing but respect for you!--But that is the problem with GIRLS--and why YOU will never make it in this business--all the #### vanity--this is 2011--don't you know there are 2in1 shampoos and conditioners!! No wonder you don't think you can get 2985 miles in a weekend LEGALLY!! Jeez--I bet you even wanna stop EVERYDAY and take a shower! and don't get me started on all that blow dryer nonsence-- remember if the good lord wanted you to blow dry your hair--he wouldn't have given us hair ties!
