But would I still need a rear plate for a different state? My plates are from TX.

    No.
I believe TX only requires one plate on a commercial semi tractor

    Cabinover101 and PE_T Thank this.

I meant to say would I get in trouble in any state (aside from TX) if I bobtail with only the front plate?

You only need 2 plates in NY if your truck is plated there.

    NJ still requires both.

To illustrate how cheap Indiana is with their license plates, they issue only one plate, which I send them approx $1700 per year for the privilege.
I have had the same plate on my truck for 17 years. After pocketing $28,000 in fees do you think they would send me a new one, say once every 5 years or so?
    Nope.

TX did that to me. CO wanted to but didn't.

When I got back to the yard I had the company put a beam through the back bumper guard so nobody else would hassle me.

A bumper extension to stop the flaps from flapping.

I looked at the local trailers and none of them had anything to stop their flaps from flapping in the wind.

    PE_T and JC1971 Thank this.

Years ago I got pulled over between Laredo and San Antone. Cop said my mudflap were "sailin' in the wind" on the trailer. Was a nearly new trailer with those stiff plastic flaps. Weren't "sailin'" anywhere. He wrote me a warning ticket. But on the tractor. Idiot. The real reason he pulled me over? He asked me "what is that on your dash? Radar detector?" Nope, cell phone. As soon as he got back in his car a truck went by missing a mudflap and away he went.

    PE_T and Cabinover101 Thank this.

Guess that's why they created the "anti-sail" mudflap

    PE_T Thanks this.
