The Fed's froze the weight limits on the Interstate system to whatever they were when they were frozen (1986 maybe?). This is why you see the big haulers out west with 100k+, the guys in Michigan with 150k+, etc with divisible loads. FL just added a yearly fee ($240) to run 88,000 on State and local roads only. It is not valid on the interstate.

Probably has prepass on his truck and gets a green light all the time.

I'd still like to know how he does that, I have prepass and I don't get a green every time and the link showing the company's safety record, I'd be even more surprised if they were never pulled in...JMHO...

The answer is simple. Is it worth your CDL?

If you have to ask, it's probably not ok. If it was ok, it wouldn't involve breaking the law.

Find another employer. There's plenty of them in this business.

Sorry but I have to laugh when I see people making a big deal about being 80,500 or like 81,000. They have absolutely no idea what really goes on. Take a trip to Virgina, West Virgina, PA, KY or even southern Ohio and check out the coal trucks.

Most of these only have 6 axles. So next time your scared of being 500# over on your trailer, these guys are usually 30k over on their drives alone.:biggrin_2559:

Last trip I took to down the coal roads I was amazed how no cars pulled out in front of me and if they saw a truck coming up behind them they got out of the way, and I wasn't even pulling a dump. People know what goes on and for the most part they stay out of the way.:biggrin_25514: They seem to have A LOT more respect for trucks knowing how heavy they are.

Most of the last year I've been over gross or axle when totally fueled up maybe 1,500 or so.

If you know where you're going, where the scales are and which ones are open when it's not that big of a deal, just make sure to be low enough on fuel to cross the scale.

My uncle drives a dump trailer and lives by the 3% when hauling slag, sand, salt, scrap, etc. Has gotten into arguments with DOT officers before and let him go for being over. Although on his routes he is NEVER going by even one of the Rest Area/Weigh Stations and is usually just pulled over on a state or US route in the middle of nowhere to get his inspection/weigh.
