I can assure you it's possible. We called it super hooking.
Not easy, but possible. I ####ed up and pinched the dolly's pig tail the first time I tried it like you say but with practice and lots of pull-ups you can get it there.
It's a skill definitely worth taking the time to learn if you're gonna have to string a lot of sets in snow/ice. No one wants to be pushing dollies around by hand in that ####.

Roger that, I stand corrected

Just a couple things I have to say.
Agree 100% that getting the trailers and the weights in the right order is most important to trailer stability.
Don't agree that you don't have to watch the rear trailer. Not only are a lot of passing accidents are from a guy that didn't watch the rear trailer but stability problems first show up in the rear trailer. And, not all sets track the same. The typical 28' pups and a short tongue dolly track close to the same path but not perfect if your one of those guys that runs close to the curb. For example, we have a large drainage ditch around the corner from our shop and without fail someone always manages to get their pup in that ditch. Long tongue dollies, tandem dollies, and rocky mountain doubles are even more likely to off track from their lead trailer.
Backing the set is possible. So is backing just the trailer and dolly. Not that big of a deal except when you need to. Don't get yourself in a situation where you need to back. Backing this crap in the yard for hitching is one thing. Backing down a street or around a corner is another.Last edited: Dec 5, 2016
RedRover Thanks this. -
I don't normally see too many good doubles drivers. I either pass them quickly or let them pass and slow way down, so I don't have to drive near them lol.
Got the endorsement, but that can go there with my tanker and hazmat endorsement I don't plan on using for years until I'm an expert lol -
Backing a 28 in a hole is harder than hooking them up and going down the road. I enjoyed my line run (phx -kingman - phx) 5 nights a week, alas, nothing good lasts forever.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! really appreciate it..
Well just took the first steps..
Applied to OD and they've forwarded my App to the location I'm interested in.. -
Having a good counterweight on the dolly is a big help. Fortunately, they pretty much all do anymore. We've phased out all the old pieces of crap with crank landing gear on them.
Too bad they did likewise with the ones that had the spring mounted fifth wheels. -
If you think this is not possible maybe you should not be a truck driver.

Lol... I've pulled doubles, and I've never been able to back up doubles with any control beyond about 40ft. 1st 10feet are easy, but once the rear trailer picks an angle I don't see how you would be able to counter it.
I'd would like to see you post a video of you backing a set of doubles into a parking spot...
Some guys figure it out, but no one I've ever worked with has been able to figure it out.
Mechanics of backing are difficult when you have no control over a rear pivot point.TequilaSunrise Thanks this. -
Im not talking about backing the whole set up there genius, If you paid attention you would have seen that i said to learn how to back up the dolly while hooked to the lead trailer. And the reason is, so you dont have to work as hard. See when you drop your back trailer in the yard you then proceed over to where your rear trailer you are hooking to is located and just back the dolly up to the front of it. Then you drop your front trailer, go grab the front trailer you are picking up, hook up to it back it up to the dolly you just placed in front of rear trailer hook to dolly then back under rear trailer and POW your set is hooked. And yes i can back a set of doubles up not very far have you but i can do it.
