Purchase advice needed ford LTL9000

    Looking at purchasing a dump truck to use mostly to haul rock around the farm. There’s a local construction guy that has a couple LTL 9000 for sale. Well he actually has them sitting back against the woods and I had to stop and talk to him about them. He states they ran when they were parked about three or four years ago and they just upgraded trucks. He does have a pretty large business.

    They are 1982 ltl9000 and 1977 ltl9000 both have double frames. Detroit motors and 13 speed tranny. Beds are in decent condition with 1982 in a little better shape. Tires appear to hold air. Said the fronts have disc brakes and rear is air. He said he will have them running for me to inspect next week. Asking 3500-4000. Cabs don’t look too rust. Little door sill rust but I don’t think mounts are compromised.

    Questions are:1. Is the price on the high side? I’m leaning towards he’s on the higher side.

    2. What are the major inspection items on a truck this old other than running and shifting operation? Any major issues with these trucks?

    3. How expensive are the disc brakes to replace? He said that’s all he thinks it would need to run up and down the road safely.

    can't you get a mechanic there and check them out???

    being parked 3 or 4 years, he most likely forgot anything they actually do need.'

    Well he’s about 1.5’ from home so possibly but not likely without paying him

    well that's the idea, you pay him..would you rather just take the word of the seller..??

    anything worth buying is worth paying someone to check it out, do you work for free....????

    Cool, the LTL 9000 were great trucks, but need more info. 1st, 3 or 4 years could really mean 10, and what kind of Detroit. If it's a 2 stroke, sitting is never good. I've never seen older trucks with disc front brakes, most had none at all. If he's asking that for both, and I needed a couple yard horses, I'd go for it. LTL's are really just Louisvilles with bigger hoods, and not the best heavy duty truck, great road truck, off road, a bit light. Macks are always the best for that, but cost more. The LTL was a good truck. Not long ago, a guy from Col. Springs stopped at our local cafe with a LTL sleeper rig. It looked a bit tired( so would you running them mountains all your life) but one could see, it was still a pretty sharp truck.

    Find your self a sterling Dump truck over the ford.

    IDK, I drove a brand new Sterling, and that was the biggest POS. Loaded, broke the engine mount letting the clutch out once. Rode awful, shook, really. I hated that truck. Disgrace to Ford trucks, although, it had pretty big shoes to fill, replacing the Louisville.

    I guess that's just like any model B Ford Chevy Dodge Exedra exedra I had really good luck with my Sterling and I did have the Ford lt9000 and I hated it

    Sterlings are just rebadged Aeromax aren't they? Either way they are a throwaway truck IMO. Even the heavy spec ones are cheaply built from what I've seen.
