How much is too much when it comes to miles on the odometer? Did Peterbilt build a better truck in the 90s then now? If I was looking into buying a used 379 what's a good year to look for and how many miles are too many on the truck?

If you are like me and looking for a tired bobtail to drive a few miles once a month sure miles is irrevelant as long it passes a strict DOT inspection.
You are getting into RV territory with that, Im still learning. Ive taken enough Petes across the ADESA auction block to understand that they are generally disposed of at 750,000 or greater miles at 20K to 30K selling prices minus 30% auction fee. They do hold value. I remember one specific pete in particular. I would have bought that one with my selling Grandparents into indentured work 7 years to get it. IT was that good despite 920,000. Beautiful. A joy, a pleasure. No Im not BS. You could almost count the valves on that jacobs by listening to them things rattle like chains of the dead. mmm mm mm.
Most people wont understand. If you hop into a tractor and love it, buy it.
You and Old Iron will always have a working relationship, with you on the wrench lol.Dave_in_AZ, Diesel Dave, Lepton1 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I was on a used slash Leasing site just a little while ago that's stocked Peterbilts and they were going for anywhere from $26000 an upwards of $96000 and some of them had over a million miles. In no way am I ready to purchase all right now but I was just wondering about mileage and when high mileage is too #### High. And if there we're certain years that Peterbilt produced a better tractor? You know like when it comes to Harley's anything pre 87 is going to have a good motor in it...x1Heavy Thanks this.

I remember the 87 Harley issue. Man talk about wiping the dust off.
26 to 96K for a pete? whoo.. that's rich. I wonder if rich people are buying those things to take advantage of the mechanical engine to beat Uncle Sam's emisisons laws today? Would that be a hoot.
If every bolt is tensioned properly on a pete, yes every bolt... there is no reason not to get it working past a million and some miles It's airride right? And it's a game of Bolts (Sorry thrones...) minding a pete. I love em. But bolts bolts bolts. And weather stripping, that rubber gasket everywhere, make sure your sleeper and cab is one body, in the old days we used to have strips of rubber between the two.Hoodoo Voodoo Thanks this. -
Those pants that were on the high end in 96 thousand custom show trucks. Yeah I know bolts and bolts yeah I went metric for quite a few years. I worked at a British motorcycle shop the largest supplier of British bike parts in the country in Wayne Michigan. British only is the name of the company I used to break apart and rebuild Norton's matchless bsa's Triumph. My first Chopper what's a 1966 TR6 650 I had that thing overboard on the lower end in a hardtail frame stripped down to just the necessities chain driven kickstart suicide shift ape hangers yeah that bike if you could kick-start a bike you could ride off with it and there was no keyed ignition I had a old Joe hunt Magneto on it like the kind that used to run on the farm tractors as the generator and believe it or not she was a trophy winner I want several trophies with that bike then I got hit on it back in 09 I kept it after the accident for a while but it never rode the same metric heavy it's all about metricx1Heavy Thanks this.

We've got a '94 379 with a little over 2 million on the clock. Pretty much the whole drivetrain has been gone through at least once. A couple of months ago we painted it and replaced most of the lights and the rubber seals. She should be good for a million more.
It's not a great pic but it's the only one I have on this phone.Dave_in_AZ, Hoodoo Voodoo, x1Heavy and 1 other person Thank this. -
I drove a 96 Pete as a loaner for a week and other then the big pipes it had on it for exhaust it was the quietest truck I've even driven. No rattles everything was solid and worked.
The only reason I knew it was a 1996 is because I verified I had the registration and insurance before taking it off.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
oooooOOOOooo nice. I want. Hand me keys please. lol.TROOPER to TRUCKER Thanks this.
