The FB post I saw said straps were used instead of chains therefore causing load to come loose.

It is sad that drivers just don't get it but what's really sad is how supervisors and managers think that those straps are like chains. I have hauled a few rolls of steel and aluminum for one company, and every time I get loaded I get the shop super coming up to me and telling me I only need one or two chains or straps because the other drivers do it that way. I told him and his boss - the plant manager - that if I listened to them, I wouldn't be doing my job and asked them if I can tell them how to do them their jobs but if I can't, then they need to shut their mouths and leave me alone. It takes me five more minutes to do it right and safe.

What moron told hin straps were acceptable on a coil?

Look, I haul a poop ton of coils, both steel and aluminun, in all three configurations possible. Personally, I prefer to load them suicide. I fibd them easier to chain down and tarp that way. But I realize that I'm in the minority there. But I have never relied on straps to secure a suicide! Heck, I don't rely on my chains! Half the game in hauling steel (or aluminum, which will kill you just as quick) is HOW YOU DRIVE IT! Steel demands respect in all aspects. Fron securement, to acceleration and braking, to turning and lane changes. A minor screwup at any point in time could mean tge end of soneone's life.

That said, I actually prefer sterl hauling and would do it more often in it didn't mean wait times that make reefer draggers flinch in sympathy and rates that don't come off the bottom of the barrel but drag through the muck under the barrel....

I am guessing thats why they say securing heavy rolly #### so it can roll towards the driver instead of rolling side to side is called suicide.

Personally, I hate suicide. Only half the chains really secure the coil in a hard braking event. Shotgun gives the best securement. Eye to the sky is easiest ... usually.

It always amazes me, the number of trucks going down the road. They do a simple lane change and do it so abrupt you can see the whole side of the trailer. So many drivers are clueless.

That wasn't OH , it was on think 431or231 coming out of IN to KY not far from maso/Owensboro. And yea that for better lack of terms DRIVER used 4 straps to secure a coil

EDIT; update btw the driver is fine other than needing to remove and replace one drivers seat and a change of underwear and pants. He is also looking for employment

And these shippers still give Western Express many loads. I wonder how many divers who loaded next to this guy saw his securement and just chuckled to himself instead of giving him advice.
