Don't wanna come off as a wouss huh?More power to you.I suppose come winter when the handle is full of ice and snow harder then heck to pull in 20 below you refuse to use a puller huh because you're the man?.
Sorry pattyj, don't mean to sound chauvinistic, but real men don't use those buttons or pullers. Ya lay across the drives, bump your head on the trailer and give a yank,,,,,OH, MY BACK!!!(and my head)
Oh, yeah, big tough guy! (whispering, truth be known, with my back, I'd give it a pull, my back would go out, and the party's over)Actually, some of the newer ones, you have to pull AND turn so it stays out. I had to help my ex-girlfriend once a few years back, she said, the handle won't stay out when I pull it on a new truck she was driving, and she didn't want to call the boss. She was kind of timid that way. I couldn't get it myself, until I read the instructions( I know, another man thing, reading instructions) and it said to pull AND turn. TA DA.

When I was at kb I left my fifth wheel puller in my car.Won't make that mistake again.Had to borrow another drivers puller all day which is like 12 drops a day. These piticular fifthwheels it was a necessity to have a puller.Every local kb driver carries one.I won't drive trk unless I have a puller. So you're not the man huh, lol.Neither is Ray,lol. He uses a puller.
Oh, yeah, big tough guy! It is entirely possible that it is indeed a pneumatic kingpin release. I had one (and a hydraulic lifting fifth wheel) on an old OTR single screw truck when I worked for Winn Dixie. I don't know if they retrofitted it or spec'd it that way but it was in service as a yard goat (good thing - it was a real POS). The button looked a lot like the red and yellow ones but it was round and blue, had the warning you described and you had to hold it in to keep the jaws open. It didn't lock them open. When you released it the jaws locked back closed. The handle on the 5th wheel was only there in case the in-cab pneumatic release failed. I've not heard of them being on OTR rigs (only yard goats) but I don't see why not. I'd think they'd put some type of flip type guard to keep it from accidentally getting pushed driving down the road.

Hi aminal, I ran an Ottawa yard spotter, and it was that way, you held the button in, and it released the trailer, and when backing under another trailer, you held it in again, and released it after you were under the pin. The road tractor ones are different. The device is the same as the handle on the 5th wheel, but the brakes have to be on to release, but you then back under a trailer like normal, just like pulling the handle.

I just want to point out to those folks that are calling all of us steering wheel holders that as a society we are moving forward. There is no reason to use a match to light the stove anymore and yet the food still tastes as good. Getting a truck with automatic versus manual does not make me less of a man. Using a knob or a button to unlock the jaws on a fifth wheel lock does not threaten my manhood. I believe in using any labor saving device I can. Work smarter not harder.

However, I would like to point out that the greatest Labor saving device is Woman. Because if men had to go through labor there would be no human race.
