I'd just fail them. If they don't think its important now what are they going to be like when they go solo?

More accidents then not are caused by new drivers of a yr or less exp.Could be from lack of training and/or lack of not paying attention to the trainer.

I believe the biggest reason newbies are involved in a high rate of accidents is largely due to a high volume of unqualified trainers and substandard training policies. Any company that runs a trainer and trainee as a team should lose their ability to train. This is an unsafe practice and no matter how you try to justify it , it is unsafe...

Secondly, i believe that one should have a minimum of 5 years accident and ticket free experience before being allowed to train...accident free at least...and yes"non preventable"..

This business of letting someone train after 3 months of experience is criminal.

Simple follow the master of Anticellphone Phil Robertson. Ask the students if any of them have a cell phone, get them to hand it to you then throw it as far as you can.

Once you leave the store with it it is no longer a 700.00 phone, it becomes a used phone.

Chances are they just don't want to talk to you and they're hoping if they stare at the phone you'll shut up. I know i did lots of stuff like that. Pretend to go sleep in the back while trainer drives, put ear phones in so i can't hear him etc....

Training is important, but one of the reasons people get into trucking is for the freedom and independence. Getting stuck with someone who is in charge of you in a sardine can 24/7 for weeks on end is insane. The last thing you want to do is spend 24/7 talking.

My 3 coworkers who do our training have a rule, now granted this is for local work, when the truck is in motion, unless the phone rings, it's in their pocket, jacket or on the dash. The only time they are to use their phone is they are sitting at a customer and there is nothing for them to be learning at that moment.

A good test, find a road sign and ask them to tell you what it said after you go past. If they can't answer you, then it's time for a long talk.
