That just sounds like running sensibly. When I think of running hard I think of shutting down with only minutes left on the clock utilizing pretty much all your available driving time to get the miles done.

I have to admit that having never done OTR I don't know whether that is achievable or even advisable.

I usually start running through my options with no less than an hour left. As I said, all the options are within a 60 to 70 mile stretch and I don't like to spend more than a few minutes looking for a parking spot at each option. That way I'm not blindly looking for parking as my hours run out (or, even worse, after the fact).

    Redtwin Thanks this.

I wholeheartedly agree. I (almost) never seem to have an issue finding parking in certain regions west of the Mississippi (like Texas, for example). But the East coast? It can be tough after 6:00 PM (or earlier in the Northeast). And, speaking of the northeast, I find my average speed is a bit slower up there, especially along the I-95 corridor from Richmond, VA northward. Just throws another curveball into my trip planning.

    Redtwin and otherhalftw Thank this.

Yes, my average tends to drop from DC North to around 60 mph, and in the 50's in New England.

For parking in the NE I try to keep industrial parks in mind that have street parking,

no requirement to be bobtail, unladen is the critical term, which means no FREIGHT.

Know what's funny? I have no issues parking in the NE. I'm up there so much I know what stops I can count on and which are a waste of time regardless of the time of day.

Last night I went over my 14 by close to 90 minutes on I10. It's been about 4 years since I've been down here and thinking; it's Saturday, parking will be no problem, and ran my clock down to 5 minutes. I was wrong. Very wrong. I wound up taking my eight in a weigh station after trying 4 different stops and a rest area. I don't think I've ever done that.

That depends on the state you're running in. [see my previous post] Fed has a guideline, not a regulation, leaving the decision for compliance requirements at the state level.
Like I said before...experience is quite the earned tool! Who says knowledge is lost to the idiots? Although......

Where were you on I-10? In my experience it can be just as bad there as anywhere else, until you get past Louisiana.

The link I posted earlier from JJ Keller states Bobtail OR unladen...

Then there is this from a Sr Edited at JJ Keller that says one must be Bobtail.

I have used it twice in my life and was Bobtail both times,

I drove 4000 miles since last Saturday without required 34hrs restart. Yesterday I had only 3 hours left to drive, but this morning +7 extra hours showed up on my qualcomm. How??? I think my company just added somehow extra hours on my elog so I could reach my delivery today...
