Who is getting paid to load the trailers. I agree if I could hook preloaded trailers all or even most of the time I could cut my wasted time in half. Heck, one of our major recievers takes up to 8 hours to unload us and then we have to go washout. Oh and we have to move that trailer at least once from the staging area to the unloading area and then wake up again to drive a short distance to the washout. No wonder I am always tired.

Who is being paid to load your trailers? Do you have extra trailers and shag drivers at the shippers? And who is paid to babysit the trailers for washouts.

Can you fool an auditor if he/she has access to a GPS trail of your whereabouts. I agree you cannot. But where in the FMCSA rules is it stated that a company has to have GPS in their trucks let alone provide the history to an auditor? Thus, w/o the GPS what protects the driver from having to choose between whistle blower status or unemployment? It is my guess that auditors are not very in depth or they are looking the other way. During Senate hearings some commentators called our log books comic books and I understand why.

I have been mobile DOT stopped once in three years of driving. He had 7 days of logs to look at in 20 minutes during which time he also had to inspect my truck, not get run over, and write me a ticket. The rest of the time you can choose to a greater or lessor degree how often you want to visit the scales. When the government levels the playing field by making all companies put little black boxes in all trucks I will believe the government is trying do do something except pull the wool over the eyes of the public that they are serious about uniform enforcement of HOS rules.

How heavy are those loads that get dropped and hooked? Its seems to me that you'd have to have all your trucks and trailers be identical to axle out. My company put me in a newer truck and I had to have them move the kingpin back on my trailer just to get my axle weights even. Just sliding the fithwheel didn't do it. Our trucks and trailers are all so different, we'd never get away with the drop and hook thing.

Most of our loads net 45,000 or less . There was one vendor I had take 3,000 lbs. off to be legal . You had to be on your toes with them . Trailers were drop weighed . You only weighed the trailer out , not the whole rig . It's little aggravating always pulling around 4,500 gallons in 6,000 and 7,000 gallon tanks . But then over half my miles are run empty .

We have two terminals that are within 10 miles of most of our shippers . Local drivers shag the trailers . They are paid hourly . We have dedicated trailers that always run the same product and most don't require washout . We have a tank wash at our terminals for washing out tanks that require it .
I make more in my first 3 day trip running these tanks than I did running 5 1/2 days making 3 trips in hopper bottom .
We have GPS because it is the smart thing to do to keep drivers in compliance . The liability risk is too great to let drivers be running in violation . The customer know about the strict compliance policy and accept it . It's up to the shipper to get the load out on time to have it meet the delivery appointment . That's the way it should be .

All the QC drivers that I run into seem happy other than the usuall complaints.
As far as running tanker legally and still making money I completly agree with you that you can.
The run I'm doing right now is decanted oil from bp refinery in toledo to kinder morgan in Argo,Ill. It pays about 1,050 to 1,150 to go 262 miles and deadhead back.
Because of the possible delays at shipper or receiver they are preloading my trailer for me at night so their are no HOS issues.
I work for advantage tank lines,a division of Kenan advantage group and they treat the HOS the same and equipment inspection.
Tanker companies are realizing that doing things legally and safe will save them millions, and forcing recievers to understand the way we run.
On the other hand I've never drove for anyone else that did things right.
