jessejamesdallas..... You mentioned amps needing converting in an earlier post. Would an amp like this one http://www.rfconcepts.com/PRODUCTS/...00-Autotune-Full-Legal-Limit-Linear-Amplifier need to be converted as well? It says it covers 160 meters through 10 meters. If cb is in the 11 meter band, it looks like it could be used, but maybe not? And if it does have to be converted, does that just open up the ability to amplify the 11 meter band AND still leave the rest of the advertised bands operable?
I know this would be way overkill, but in theory........

I'm running a Cobra 29 LTD (2 watt dead key, 6-8 watt swing) with a Palomar Elite 250 Amp. A powerhouse it isn't but it seems to get out a good distance. Is that a good set up??
-
The reviews on this amp seem to be pretty good. Do you get good reports when you're talking? Reports of clean sound?
-
Yes, I do. Right now I'm using a K-30 antenna but I want to switch to either a Wilson 1000 or a Wilson 5000. Is the 5000 a lot better than the 1000???
-
Not entirely sure. There may be more differences than I realize, but I've always thought it was more a matter of the power handling capabilities of the two antennas. And whether or not it's base, middle, or top load. I've heard the higher the load on the antenna, the better it will transmit, with no load (102" whip) being the best.

Get 2 pill fatboy would be a perfect little setup for the general lee.

Better names out there include Fatboy, Xforce and Texas Star. Watch for fakes/copies on some of the older names. I have seen Gray, Palomar and other "old school" names printed on noisy junkers, which were obvious sub par knock offs. Have even seen Texas Star knockoffs on Ebay. Lots of serious CB DX contesters are using Fatboys and Xforces with great results.
Just my opinion... If you are going for a high quality amp anyway, get one with a pre-amp. It will help you talk with those who opted not to go for an amp or are just running lower power setups... -
FYI, I was told by a buddy there are two guys using the name Davemade out there. One is substantially better than the other, My buddy is one of those channel six (aka the superbowl) nuts and contestors. He cruises all over for contests and swears by Davemade. He has Dave install and service all his equipment. He goes to him in person somewhere in South Jersey. He really gets out and his equipment seems to be well made. He runs a modded 29 (he hates SSB, LOL!) with a Davemade driver pushing a huge Davemade box behind it. Talks around 3000 honest watts. His stuff seems to work well. Not my thing though I like it!
I know nothing about the other Davemade. Also, I am going strictly by what my buddy told me, however he is pretty knowledgeable in my opinion.
