I posted earlier about a Ranger 2950 and am planning on trying to use this radio to mess around on 11 meters as well as play on 10 meters. (Yes, I have my ham license). I am planning on using an Antron 99 but was just wondering what to expect with this band?
I have never worked 10 meters before but was curious about what to expect... Seems that at times the band can be really open with a lot of activity and other times, it's pretty quiet...
Question about 10 meters

From 28.000 to 28.299, you'll hear a lot of beeps and such with the morse code crowd.
28.300 to 28.499 is where you will hear quite a few folks on upper side band. 28.400 is the call frequency, although some foreign stations can be heard calling CQ anywhere north of 28.400.
29.600 is the repeater frequencies.
Best thing to do is go to 28.400, call CQ, throw out your call your call sign. You may have to repeat yourself several times.
Or listen in on someone else calling CQ, if they're just trying to see how many contacts they can make, their conversations will be short, then you'll hear them call out their call sign followed by the letters "QRZ" which is morse code for "who is calling me". As soon as you hear "QRZ", that is your cue to call out your call sign and see if he acknowledges your call. In a way, it's similar to how the side band crowd on 38 lower operates.
Be patient, as even though you may not hear anyone else, it's likely he has a "pile up" going, of others who hear him and are trying to get thru.
Also the 10 meter band is typically open in the day, though there are times it remains open well after sundown. However unlike some of the other bands, 10 meters seems to be hit or miss, even when 11 meters is hopping with action.
HTH.stacks Thanks this. -
You pretty much described 10m. When it's open, you can literally work the world on 5W and a coat hanger. When it's not open, it doesn't matter what you have.
For the most part, 10 is a daytime band. Don't expect to work much DX if you're driving the night shift.cuzzin it Thanks this.
