Interestingly enough we just had a similar situation. I'm still uncertain if I handled it properly but it's of no use to look back and lament. Took a load 1254 miles for 3000 dollars. Receiver refused load. Driver called me and the broker. I told broker that I'd haul it back at the same rate but wanted assurance of a load out of same place back to our home area. Broker said that the shipper would pay "fair market rate" out of Idaho, ie 2500. I was under a load at the time and without my computer and under the gun due to weather. Not an excuse, but also improperly set up to do business.......ended up taking the 2500 and cancelling on a load from another broker we work with regularly. Didn't like it but that's the way it ended up.

What should I have done differently? At this point I've comitted to chalking it up to experience on my part.

I would have charged so much you probaly could not have handled it! Then again if it was a regluar customer I would have been easy.

Well it all worked out I guess when I gave them my high rate it cause them to think of a better solution they said I can just bring it to origional consignee and they would send someone to check the product after its off my truck I'm satisfied everyone was happy in the end so all as well
