What about someone with a year or two of OTR exp? Do they typically have to start out as a casual with the casual pay rate or do they go straight to driver pay for P&D?

Not at all. You should have no trouble getting hired into linehaul or city P&D full time. You don't need to be a casual at all.
-
All union companies your considered casual until, you make the union list
-
Well I don't think all companies do that. Any full time employee in a union shop has to join the local. I have 1 year regional and local experience. I specifically asked if I must start as a casual and was told no. But I am also already a member of the union at my current job so idk if this is a factor. There seem to be very few openings for linehaul, at a limited number of locations. Local city driver might be your best shot at it.

If your a teamster you won't have to re-pay the intiation fee, but if A different local you have to pay a transfer which is dirt cheap. You are considered casual until your done with probation.
imtimmy Thanks this. -
Which is what, 30 days probationary period?
-
When I interviewed for ABF it was 75 days
-
Thanks guys. They seem like a great place to work for from most of the comments here. They have a terminal just down the road from my apt and have been posting on job sites looking for full time P&D/dock combo. I'm content with my current company and pay but being home every night instead of 3 days every 6 weeks really is tempting.
I know each place is a little different, but does it generally slow down a lot in the colder months or is it pretty steady thru the year?
Thanks for all the helpful replies so far! -
Slows down during winter aka no ones on vacation

Its 15 punches in a 30 day period then you go on probation for 30 working days then you make the list.
