Why?
at -11, I was able to start my Tri-pac after 4 days of sitting in sub-zero temps. Letting the APU run for 3 hours was enough to get the truck warm enough to start as if it had been plugged in overnight.
The 7500 btu bunk heater won't keep the cab warm at 0 to 5 above. It will get it to about 50-55 degrees which gets uncomfortable.
The apu arctic kit warms the engine allowing me to shut off the big engine and not worry about fuel diluting the oil or washing the cylinder walls with fuel and causing unneeded wear.
I don't have to idle the truck which also causes diesel slobber after while which creates issues with EGR and other emission equipment on the truck.buddyvuk Thanks this. -
I never looked into what Espar was in the Columbias, they are almost all gone now, but it could cook you out in a full condo, even if it was really cold. Those were Lessors trade ins.
The lease company wouldn't put a dime into the APUs, but fixing them to run was usually worth it in fuel saved.
Needless to say, until the law requires them, the lease company isn't equipping the new trucks with them, either.buddyvuk Thanks this. -

This was old thinking, if your worrying about "fuel diluting" you have major engine problems, not like this with today's engines, I idle my 2012 ISX for 10 hrs and burn about 3.8 gallons, if its above 20 degrees, ill run my esbar, compare that with the initial cost, and maint. of an APU, and it will take quite awhile to recoup the cost, do yourself a favor and either listen too, or read some of Kevin Rutherford comments about APU'Sbuddyvuk Thanks this. -
transam has 1500 apu's because idling is cheaper
any study can say anything

Thanks. I don't like snake oil salesmen.buddyvuk Thanks this. -
Big engine is for hauling big loads down the road. Use the right tool for the job.
Little engine is for maintaining the operator comforts when you are parked. Use the right tool for the job.
After than, let's just agree to disagree. Doesn't sound like either one of us are willing to change our ways.buddyvuk Thanks this. -
At 550 hp and 2050 lbs of torque, its more than adequate to power my way up any hills and idle at a reasonable cost, when not using my esbar, which, as I said, I use when it doesn't require me to run my engine to prevent freeze ups.
As far as Kevin Rutherford being a "snake oil" salesman, I wouldn't call a leading authority on modern diesel engines such a term, and while I do disagree, I would change my "way' if I had hard facts regarding the feasibility of cost savings/performance of APU'S most, if not all have issues and I prefer to idle when necessary.buddyvuk Thanks this. -
Marketing....
THAT is his success. And THAT is snake oil salesmen. He is the voice they use. He is NOT all knowledge.buddyvuk Thanks this. -
25(2)+2 Thanks this.
