I have an 88 International 9370 with a BC4, been having some temp issues, nothing crazy, but I’ve put a new rad in it (old one sprung a leak), both OEM thermostats, the air clutch temp sensor, and made sure the system was bled.

Seems to be good until I’m loaded or pulling a trailer and put a load on it (pulling a grade) starts to get hot (200 degrees or so).

Just wanted to know if anyone knows exactly how to route the 3 rad hoses...

    Thank you,

    Shane

Do you have the fan shroud on it ?

9B0F7BE5-DA53-4F5D-90FB-325BE50431CD.png Big Cam 4 engines are designed to run hotter than the earlier Big Cams. Keep in mind little things like water pumps and belts can create issues too..... what temps did you notice before you replaced the radiator?

I run a Big Cam engine too, mine was a BC4 just like yours, but I changed it to high flow cooling, you still have the low flow cooling. I also run N14 air to air.

Yes, I have a shroud, and I have the thermostats in with the spring facing out, got a diagram from Cummins for the correct location of the different thermostats.

It’ll run at 170 idling, but will occasionally head up to 190 idling...runs around 180 unloaded (22,000 lbs) but when I have a small load (mini and a tag trailer, so about 40k gross) it will get to around 200, maybe a hair less on small grades.

I also have a 9 speed and 24.5 talls so the gearing is not ideal, 8-9 is a big jump.

It also only revs to 1900...is this normal? My CLP is 1185.

I feel that if I could get up to 2100 or so I wouldn’t drop below the sweet spot in the next gear.

I’m just wondering if anyone could post a pic of where the hoses from the thermostat housing go..

    Thank you for your reply’s,

    Shane

See if I can find you a routing diagram, temps sound about normal really.

    Thank you,

I think that the thermostats were sticking, I just drove it to work yesterday (88 degrees with high humidity) never got above 190. Was sitting about 180 at 60 mph in 9th at about 1600 rpms.

Does anyone know what rpm my governor should be at? Like I said, it only revs to 1900, also, I’m only making 16 pounds of boost, any suggestions?

1900 rpms should be what your pump is set at. Back around 1990 I ran a Cabover Kenworth for H&W with a 365 BC4. I didn’t want to get in the pump since it wasn’t mine, so I pinched off the fuel return very carefully getting it to where I wanted it. That helped a lot with gaining just a little extra torque for pulling the hills through WV, Tenn, VA, Penn, and NC which is where I ran a lot at that time. You could have a good shop rework your pump turning up the rpm’s a little bit, but I wouldn’t be adding a bunch of fuel to it. Your CPL shows you have a 365 / 400 engine.

Yes, mine is a 400, isn’t the governor spring and assembly located where the button is? Wouldn’t I have to remove that to get to the button anyway?

I’d like to put a slightly more aggressive button in it, and I was thinking that I could shim or adjust the governor while in there...
