Hi. I crossed to Canada today. Been on US HOS whole week, but would run out of hours before getting to Edmonton, where I have a delivery on Monday. Also wanted to stop at the truck stop for 36 so I switched to Canadian HOS. Drove 11h40min. Now question, when I cross back to the US next week, should I get inspected (knock on the wood), can they say anything about that 11h40min driving while in Canada? And if they say, how do I defend myself? Thanks
Question about Canadian HOS

You can drive up to 13 in canada
B4 you go back to us make sure
A) you are not over your 70h
B) make a full 10h brake
Btw make sure that you have a 24h brake in the last 14 days
Ps where are you i'm in my way to edm too -
Yup, what CoyoteExpress said. As they say, when in Rome do as the Romans do. Or in this case, the Canadians. Also in Canada a reset has to be 36 hours, not 34. But we do use 70 hours in seven days, vs 60 in 7.
Generally they just look at your recap hours and how long have you currently been on duty since your last sleep break. -
Actually you do what the company policy says you do. If the company policy is run US HOS thats what you do.
Can US drivers run CDN HOS while here...of course. -
There is nothing to defend, you were legal. While in Canada you can legally drive more than 11 hours. Company policy may be different but US DOT can't penalize you for not following US rules while in a Country that they don't set the rules for. Simple as that.
side note-even if the company wants you to follow US rules while in Canada that doesn't mean you don't have to be in compliance with Canadian rules. It's possible to be compliant with US rules while violating Canadian rules for maximum driving hours for the day, not having a 36 hour reset, not having 24 hours off in the previous 14 days and a couple other things. -
No, they do not make me follow US rules. It's ok for them if I run 13h in Canada, but I would rather know for myself, bc they apparently have no idea how HOS works. When I started they told my to put "CYCLE 1" remark on my logs for days driven in Canada. So when I asked "why?" My safety told my: "Because one of our drivers got a ticket for it", so I said, that she missunderstood me, that I wanted to know what that remark means. Than she said "well, I don't know".

We have a 70 hours in 7 days cycle (1) and a 120 hours in 14 days cycle (2).

Yeah... You have to put the cycle your running. The dot don't want to guess at what cycle you were running while in Canada.

You can legally follow Canadian rules but there is no guarantee that a cop or DOT that pulls you over once back in the states is going to have any idea how Canadian HOS actually works.
I found myself arguing with an Idaho State Police officer over running 16 hour shifts while in Canada. He was convinced you are restricted to 14 hour shifts like in the states.
I don't think I actually convinced him I was right. He just gave up the fight and gave me a speeding ticket instead.Zeviander Thanks this. -
Lol i run 90% cross border ... neverva prob with dot or cops
On that .. one timr in maine
Eh 13h drivetime yesterday....
Yes officer it was toronto to woodstock nb ..? Then 11h brake..
Oh ok ... you are fine ....Macneil Thanks this.
