My 05 ACERT has 785,000 miles on it. It uses almost zero oil since putting the PDI stage 1 tune in it. Before that it used a gallon after 10,000 miles and another after 8,000 miles just like clockwork. I've also got the fuel filter head and filter, mufflers, fuel temp wire and bumped the fuel pressure.
I have a friend with a 3406E 5EK 550HP that wants to make it run like my ACERT. He was told he would need a stage 2 tune, manifold, turbo and cam to MAYBE keep up...
question about CAT engines

I really wish the moderators would ban posts like this. They're not checkbook friendly!

Interesting how things change. it wasnt that long ago that most considered Acerts the worst engine Cat ever produced. now with the right mods you get a reliable high hp beast with good mpg that shows up for work everyday. I often wonder if there are Cat engineers reading these positive posts with a big smile on their face.
frankie f Thanks this. -
Most of the people who made claims against the acerts either owned the very early versions (nobody wants the first year of anything) or have never owned one. The rest are mechanics who only see the ones that break, I know I never take a perfectly running truck to a mechanic. I know there are more than a few on here, me included, that wouldn't trade the ones we have and neither of mine have been modified.........yet.

The Acerts run good with the PDI tune in them. the reason is the power band is very wide and flat........it makes as much power at 1400 RPM as it does at 1800 RPM. The twin turbos and the longer stroke build big torque numbers also.
I don't think he'll need to modify it that much to keep up on a long pull once you're rolling side by side at 65 mph, but to accelerate from a dead stop and keep along side you he'll need more than a tune.
I gave some input on a new Stage 1 E Model tune recently. I haven't had the opportunity to have a customer use it yet, but it should be stronger than what they've been using. It's based off a pre LOW NOX file with the lower water temperature settings for the fan. I'm hoping this tune is as strong as a Stage 2...........I need a guinee pig to try it on too see how they like it. PDI has run it in two trucks so far and the results have been very impressive.montana cowboy and DL550CAT Thank this. -

Oh I know. As soon as this truck goes down for something like a clutch I think Haney is going to get a call. I've talked to him about just a 625 flash but I think it would be worth the cash to just go PDI.

I may have you that guinea pig after the first of the year. Just let me check to see when the warranty is up for sure. I'll also need to get another ECM so if you know of any, cheap, let me know. Yeah, I'm cheaper than Ben...lol.
Its the 5EK 550 and as far as I know it has the pre low nox file in it already. It runs strong now, but never hurts to have more! Is your files gonna improve fuel mileage? -
Not referring to conversion to single turbo . ECM programs do not disable IVAs. all systems are intact and operational so how can you say its not an Acert any longer ?
