I think you are right. I remember smelling burnt tires also when this happened. How do I precent this in the future? Release air from airbags after uncoupling? Thanks

Simple solution is just wait a few moments for the axles to equalize. Pull out from under and stop, update your logs, handle paperwork. It only takes a minute to refill the airbags.

If you're smelling "burnt tires" following your trailer drop as your bags are equalizing, I'd say you need to have a little lighter foot in general. It's one thing to spin a little, but to apply enough power to heat them up? What's your hurry?

Did you have a heavy load on this trailer?

If so, did you have to slow to a stop at a light from 50+ mph?

I'm wondering if the smell may have been brakes.

Always dump the air off your suspension before you pull out fron under a trailer so the air bags don't get over-extended.

If you have a heavy load, and pull out from under a trailer while some of that weight is still on the fifth wheel it changes the driveline angle when the frame pops out from under the trailer. It takes a minute for the leveler to adjust the pressure in the bags.

If you don't have an air dump switch, you should be cranking the landing gear to the ground, then a few more cranks till you hear a bit of air escaping from the air bags. That will be your clue that you've unloaded the majority of the weight off the suspension and onto the landing gear.

If you have air dump, put the landing gear so it barely touches the ground. When you dump, give it a minute before you start to pull out. When the fifth wheel clears, allow it to air back up before driving off. You can snap the bolts on the base of the airbag mount if you drive away with the air bags deflated.
