I'd be curious to know which antenna you guys/gals would use for 2m on a truck...I'd have to mount something on the passenger side mirror I'm thinking.. 73 Mike
It's like any other thing. It would be up to you to make that choice. If you ask 20 people, you're gonna get 20 different answers. However, you certainly can take the most picked product and go from there. I would go for a 5/8 wave 2M/440 antenna. and they are made by several manufacturers: Larsen, Diamond. Mosely, and a slew of others. Stay with a name brand. Yeah, it's more expensive, but I've had bad experiences with cheap "clones" you see at hamfests. I don't think there is a best 2M antenna; most of them are good. Me? I prefer Larsen. Dunno why except I had good luck with them and have stuck with them over the years..... Would I buy another brand? Yes. You certainly won't go wrong with the brands I mentioned, and they stand behind their products, unlike the "fly by night" guys selling a "no-name" antenna at the local hamfest. They are here today, and may be gone tomorrow where you can't go back on 'em. GF
Thanks, I'm running a Larsen 2m glass mount on my Jeep and it does ok but obviously has some limits...I'll dig into the e-ham reveiws and see what I can come up with also... 73 Mike
I'm running an Ft-857D/ATAS-120 combination right now and it works okay 70cm-20M. It doesn't tune lower for some reason. Anyway, I just installed my D700 in the truck and am using a Diamond clamp mount on the passenger door flange with a Diamond 2M/440 and it works well. Good luck! 73
BTW firestick makes a 2 meter antenna, looks just like the CB one. Also A company makes a screwdriver, motorized with antenna matcher. I never bought one but saw it at a ham fest in Reno. They had it tuned to 6 meters
Does anyone know how well the firestick 2 meter antennas work? I had a 5 foot firestik as a cb antenna a long time ago and it seemed to work well... the antenna i have now works good but it could be better. Just wondering if the firestik would be a good antenna to use.
the firestick 2m works very well if you have a ground plane to reflect on. I bought one for my motorcycle and it works better than a 18" stainless whip but not as well as my Larsen NMO mount. For the money, it is a good antenna.
Thur the glass antennas are a very poor preforming antenna. Get a 5/8 wave antenna. And it will work wonders for you. A great antenna is a Jetstream JTM 7505. Same antenna as the Diamond SG-7500A. Cost about $35. And you will be well pleased. With it I can do more than 70 miles.
Thanks for the info much appreciated.....The Jeep (and the glass mount) are gone now, traded off for a new F-150 a few days ago so now I have more mounting options..
