I have 5GB with Verizon for $59 per month and have never come close to using it. I'm on mapquest and u-tube a lot and on the boards too.
I have a Blackberry with the unlimited data plan for $29, I just found out I can plug in my laptop with a usb tether and have free internet.
Wish I knew that earlier. When my Verizon contract runs out, that's what I'm doing.
The only drawback is not being able to use phone while plugged into laptop, but I can live with that.

    Permit09 Thanks this.

see that's the situation I'm in too.. i can tether my phone to my laptop and use it as a modem for free since i already have the unlimited data plan.. I'm gonna check out the speeds on it here later and make my mind up that way i guess

Check out slingshot.com. It's a pay as you go deal with no monthly or yearly contract. You can buy as little as $19.95 at a time.
I did the math and they beat Sprint and Verizon by a long shot.
Wiah I'd known about them sooner.

Be very very careful of tethering to the cell! I read a news report that you can be charge even with an "unlimited" plan and in a roaming area! I have sprint unlimited and a broadband card (usb) which I'll trade for a PCMIC card as the USB kind will wear out the USB plugs on your laptop! It'll be worth the extra money.

I had to come off the road at the first of the year and I had Sprint stop my BB and when it was turned back on they goofed and only put me on that 5gb cap. I use my internet for all my entertainment! I watch TV and surf ect. Well the bill came in it was $710! OH that went over well with the wife! I called and had it fixed! But go to your providers website and they have a chart that shows you EXACTLY how much of what you can do and 5GB aint much! Especially when it comes to streaming/downloading video! 7- 30 minute TV shows is about it and not much more for youtubes either! Email out the yazoo and browsing but thats it and who gets THAT much spam? With TV having gone to HD and some areas being mighty thin on TV signal I just took the TV out of the truck and use my laptop for everything!

You might also make sure of the area you will be doing most of your driving in! Sprint is great except for the North West! Look at the providers maps and click on them for a better view! Then decide on who you want to go with!

yeah that's kinda why i don't want to tether.. I don't want to have to deal with my wife either LOL.... I knew about the USB thing wearing out and coming loose which is why i'm gonna get a new laptop with a PCMCIA slot in it. I'll get the external adapter for now since i'm not going to buy another laptop until i get going. But definitely getting the card. I'll probably just end up using millenicom with the unlimited since i know i'll use more than 5GB a month. Thanks for all the helpful posts! I'll get it figured out when the time comes hehe.

    Millenicom uses the spring network.
I have sprint and love it, on a fully unlimited plan.
I hear they are not offering the plan that much anymore though.

on the website it says they have it for 69.99/month unlimited, but i'll call them when the time comes.. who knows the last time they updated their site. I have an alltel account now and they also offer the unlimited for the same price, but you need a contract

this is just my opinion but using a cell phone for internet is a pain in the ###...screen way to small....a laptop is much easier to use for me

Last time I went OTR (early this year) I simply used the truckstops wifi. Its SOMEWHAT pricey, but still on average for me cheaper than your own provider. Reception is way better than it used to be too, I think. I liked to use Pilot's, Flying J's, and Love's the best. fairly reasonable prices but I had to change the way I used the internet. It was not worth paying for if I was going to check my email and be on my way, but if i was going to park early for the night, then it was worth it. Flying J costs about 5 dollars for 24 hours and 1GB i think. The rest are usually about 3 dollars if i remember. At 20 bucks a month, you could subscribe montly to 3 different truck stop's services and still come out ahead of the game compared to 60-70 a month plus tax plus buying the device plus the contract and so on and so on...
